Ranking the Hex Girls' Discography

Given I did a couple music related posts recently, between the Where Are You and What's New theme song rankings and the Scooby-Doo songs in my music library post, I was thinking it'd be fun to do a ranking of some of the most iconic songs in the Scooby-Doo franchise: the Hex Girls' discography! It was a lot of fun compiling this list, and it was pretty tough to choose between some of these, because there are so many classics here!
13. Scooby Snacks
From: Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost Soundtrack
This is the only song I don't really like. It's a bit too cheesy and childish in my opinion, and doesn't really feel like it fits in with the style of the rest of the Hex Girls songs. Particularly the lyric "we've got stacks and stacks of lots of snacks" stands out as being a bit cringey to me.
12. Zoinks!
From: Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost Soundtrack
This one isn't cringey like "Scooby Snacks," but I'm not a huge fan of it. It's cute enough for what it is, but I find their other songs much stronger, and this one has the issue of not really fitting the Hex Girls style IMO. When choosing songs for the Hex Girls' album in my fanfic Hexed, I actually made the decision not to include this one or "Scooby Snacks" due to the tone not really fitting the style of the rest of their discography.
11. What's New, Scooby-Doo? Theme Song
From: What's New, Scooby-Doo? - "The Vampire Strikes Back"
I really like the Hex Girls' cover of this! Like I mentioned in the post with my What's New theme song rankings, I would argue it's nearly as good as the Simple Plan version. However, I would argue my top 10 are all more memorable than this one.
10. Those Meddlin' Kids
From: Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost Soundtrack
This one is really catchy! I love the production in this one, and I think their voices sound great here. I had never listened to this before researching for my fanfic Hexed, but I really like this.
9. It's a Mystery
From: Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost Soundtrack
Of the songs not in the Witch's Ghost movie, this is the best of them. I really like the mysterious sound of this, and I feel the lyrics fit really well with the tone of a goth band unlike some of the other songs on the soundtrack that weren't in the film. This is another one I hadn't heard until a little over a year ago, but I'm so glad I decided to check it out!
8. Good Bad Girls
From: Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated - "Dance of the Undead"
I like this one, but I can't help but feel it would be a bit higher if it weren't a medley. It doesn't feel we get to hear much of this song beyond just a few lines, but it's a decent song. To be entirely honest though, I like Rude Boy's song a little better haha. I enjoyed how groovy and jazzy it was.
7. Love's Curse
From: Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? - "I Put a Hex on You!"
This is another great one! "I Put a Hex on You!" is my favorite episode from Guess Who, and I love that they made a new song just for the episode. It sounds quite reminiscent of "Hex Girl" to me. Also, apologies, I couldn't find any YouTube video with the correct title of the song, so I had to link one that has the title wrong.
6. Trap of Love

From: Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated - "In Fear of the Phantom"
I really like this one for how dark it is. I'd argue it's the darkest song in their discography, and despite it being a bit more intense than their other songs, I thought it was done really well and it was a natural progression of the girls' style. I really liked Daphne's vocals here and the gritty production.
5. Who Do Voodoo?

From: Scooby-Doo and the Legend of the Vampire
I feel my top 5 is getting into the elite material, because all of the remaining songs are amazing in their own way. It's going to be tough to rank these going forward, but "Who Do Voodoo?" is my choice for #5. I really like the song and consider it a classic, but the only reason it's below the other four is because we only kinda get to hear the song in the background with all the noises that the vampires are making. It's strange to me that they'd come up with a whole song only to have it fade out without playing all of it. There are versions on the Internet that silence all the vampire noises and make the song sound crisper, and the version I've heard of the full (or at least, as full as we're going to get) song sound really good.
4. The Witch's Ghost
From:
Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost
This is perhaps an unpopular opinion (although I guess I don't really know for sure haha), but this song played during the credits of Witch's Ghost is a really underrated song. Oddly it's not sung by the Hex Girls' voice actresses...according to the credits, they were played by Gigi Worth, Angie Jaree, and Terry Wood. Regardless, I think they sound just as good as Jennifer Hale, Kimberly Brooks and Jane Wiedlin. The ominous tone of the song sounds amazing, and I like the suspenseful feel of the song, especially towards the end. The production here is the best of any Hex Girls songs IMO.
3. Earth, Wind, Fire and Air

From: Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost
It's painful to put any of these three so low, but I feel the other two slightly edge this one out. Nonetheless, it's amazing and I love the electric guitar production. Given the girls are eco-goths, I feel the theme of this song most quintessentially fits the band's style out of their entire discography, even if I like the other two just slightly better.
2. Petrified Bride
From: What's New, Scooby-Doo? - "The Vampire Strikes Back"
I'm sure I've put this song higher than most people would, but this song has always really stood out to me. The fast pop-punk sound of this song really fits with my musical interests, and I feel it is really reminiscent of how pop-punk was really popular in the 2000s with artists like Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne, Paramore, etc. Thorn's voice sounds absolutely amazing here.
1. Hex Girl
From: Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost
This song is such a classic that you might say it literally has the band's name written all over it haha. This is an iconic song and has always been my favorite song in their discography, no question.

I hope you enjoyed reading my rankings of the Hex Girls' discography! I always love seeing how my opinion compares to others, so if you want to share your rankings, I'd love to chat about it with you in the comments!

Unpopular opinion: SDMI has the best songs. They're more my style. And I love that they're collaborations with the gang in some ways, Daphne on vocals for Trap of Love and Shaggy & Scooby on guitars for Good Bad Girls. The only other one that's about on par is Earth, Wind, Fire and Air imo.

I really like “Trap of Love” and think Daphne sounded amazing there, but it would be hard to beat the Witch’s Ghost ones for me. Those feel like stone cold classics to me and among the most memorable songs in the franchise, but to each their own.

I'm with you on Trap of Love at least (even if it isn't my number one). Trust me, you don't have the weirdest top 3 out of anyone here... that would probably be me simply for one song that made it there

I love the songs of the Hex Girls! It's a shame that the movie "Scooby-Doo and the Haunted High Rise" is cancelled. We could have got other songs!

It is a bummer! I believe it was confirmed that we would have gotten new songs in that movie, so it's a shame they'll likely never be heard.

I hadn't even heard some of these, but after listening through...

13. Love's Curse: I do not dislike this one because of the show it is in, but if I were to hear this without any knowledge of what show it may be from, I could probably guess Guess Who. After all, it basically embodies all of the same traits that make me dislike Guess Who so much. It is basically the bare minimum idea of what a Hex Girls song is. It is just basic, lazy, and just flat out uncreative. An AI generator could probably make a more distinct Hex Girls song than this. Not to mention, the vocals are a serious downgrade for whatever reason. Just, hard pass

12. Scooby Snacks: Okay yeah this is shockingly awful. Cringey, extremely out of touch with the vibe of the film, and borderline unlistenable

11. Zoinks: Also very annoying, and like Scooby Snacks, very out of place. I think the lyrics in 3 out of the 4 Witch's Ghost soundtrack songs that weren't in the movie are very weak while the fourth is more just... bizarre, but at least the two that are left, the tone of the song can at least fit what the movie is going for, because the lyrics won't let us forget what it is in as they are all about Scooby Doo

10. What's New Scooby Doo: I don't even really like this rendition of the theme song all that much, and it is still somehow higher on my list than yours LOL

9. Good Bad Girls: Instrumental had a lot of promise, I just wish there was more of a song here, rather than just a loop of lyrics.

8. The Witch's Ghost: Song never really stood out to me too much, but I'd agree that the production on this one is much better than usual, but unfortunately, never really did much for me beyond that

7. Who Do Voodoo?: More nostalgic than anything. Still always felt incomplete to me, but I won't complain about this one

6. Petrified Bride: A solid What's New chase song. Still just a bit shorter than I'd like, but pretty good

5. Those Meddlin Kids: Kicking off my 3/5 normal selection and my 2/5 "Wait, really?" selection top 5 is one of those that is probably way higher for me than most. As I've said before, the lyrics are the weakest thing here. Basic Scooby Doo lyrics about Scooby Doo, but I do feel that the tone of the song and production work much better in the context of what soundtrack it is on than numbers 12 and 11. Plus it is a much better song so yeah

4. Earth, Wind, Fire and Air: A classic, it has never been one of my favorite classic movie songs of the franchise (it isn't on the same level as It's Terror Time Again, the Ghost Is Here, or another one that is finishing ahead of this one) but of course it should easily get this high

3. It's a Mystery: Now THIS one caught me off guard. What a weird song for Scooby Doo and I mean that in a good way. Other than the lines from Shaggy and stuff, it makes sense outside of the context of the movie, while also having the dark and gothic tone to work inside of the context of the soundtrack.

2. Trap of Love: Of course this one is going to be this high. It is really, really well done for a Scooby Doo song and perfectly mixes the Hex Girls vibe with the vibe of SDMI. I could argue it is the best song here, but it will never be my favorite when...

1. Hex Girl: Catchy, nostalgic, and iconic

13. I agree "Love's Curse" is a bit generic. I still like it though, it feels reminiscent of "Hex Girl" to me for some reason. I don't disagree with it being very basic and repetitive though, and with how advanced AI technology is becoming, I think an AI generator could absolutely make a better Hex Girls song than this, which is kind of frightening lol.

12. Glad I'm not the only one that feels this way. I honestly don't know how they even thought this came close to the tone/vibe of the film, or how they thought that "we've got stacks of lots of snacks" sounded like a lyric for a goth/rock band haha.

11. For me, both "It's a Mystery" and "Those Meddlin' Kids" work well with the film, but I agree they are much weaker than the ones in the film. For "Zoinks" and "Scooby Snacks," it seems like they were written by somebody who'd never seen this movie, and they just quickly slapped something together to make a soundtrack. It isn't as bad as "Scooby Snacks" to me, but it's still very generic and does not fit the Hex Girls' style at all.

10. Haha only because of "Love's Curse." I personally enjoyed their cover of the What's New Scooby-Doo theme song, but I agree many of their other songs are better.

9. Agreed that it's generic. Like I said in the post, it would have been a lot better had it been a full song rather than just a couple of phrases looped.

8. I feel like my ranking of this being so high is in part nostalgia, but I also really like Gigi, Angie and Jane's voices. I'm sure we'll likely never know, but I'd be curious to find out why they hired three different people for just this one post-credits song, given the normal voice actors even recorded lines for the soundtrack songs, so I can't imagine it was a matter of not being able to get their normal voice actors again.

5. Agreed that "Those Meddlin' Kids" works much better than "Zoinks" or "Scooby Snacks." Yeah, the lyrics are weak, but as you said the production and tone make this feel like a much more well-developed song than those other two.

3. Completely agreed, this is the one soundtrack song that I feel actually works as a song on its own. It honestly feels like this song had a completely different writer than the other three, in the sense that it works well with the tone of the movie, and doesn't feel hastily thrown together like "Zoinks" and "Scooby Snacks." This one is also elevated for me by the lyrics being actually good and not just generic lyrics about the franchise.

13. Oh it's just awful. I actually did not remember this song, saw it was pretty high on your list, went into it thinking "Okay I know I don't like the show, but the song can't be that bad, right? Right?" Well, at the very least, it isn't worse than the Guess Who theme "song". Congratulations to this song I guess?

12. It's just a trainwreck. Honestly, the only reason it is ahead of the last is that it had the decency not to be in the movie. It does not fit AT ALL, where I guess Love's Curse certainly DOES fit, but not in an acceptable way for me

11. I wouldn't even call those two much weaker than the main two, but I certainly would for these two!

8. I'd say it is the oddest thing about the soundtrack, but then I remember It's a Mystery gloriously exists

Becker

12. Love's Curse fits in the sense that it's a bad song in a bad show.

Exactly. And it sucks in a lot of the same ways the show does

13. I personally find "Scooby Snacks" much worse than "Love's Curse." While it is definitely a bit generic, I still find it fun. I may be biased by the fact The Hex Girls episode is my favorite episode of Guess Who.

12. That was very kind of the song to exclude itself from the movie haha.

Becker
5/3/2023 02:25:02 am

Ngl, It's A Mystery is a great shout for top 3. It's in my top 5.
I agree Love's Curse is way down there, it doesn't really sound Hex Girls-esque. Thorn and Luna's singing is surprisingly crappy, which is what detracts the most from my enjoyment. Out of all the opportunities to finally give Luna co-lead vocals it's a damn Guess Who episode lol; of course the production's nowhere.

I am glad I am not the only one to notice how big of a downgrade the vocals were, it just sounds bad. It really is a shame that the time she finally gets co-lead vocals, it has to happen in Guess Who, where, while I gave it a fair chance regardless, it was bound to be terrible

WildwindVampire link
5/3/2023 12:11:43 pm

Even if I like the song, I agree it was kind of a bummer that Luna's only co-lead vocals are just her saying one generic phrase and that's it.

12. Scooby Snacks
11. Curse on Me
10. It's a Mystery
9. We Do Voodoo
8. Good Bad girls
7. What's New Scooby Doo
6. Zoinks
5. Those Meddling Kids
4. Trap of Love
3. Earth, Wind, Fire and Rain
2. Hex Girl
1. Petrified Bride.

Great to see another person with "Petrified Bride" at the top of their list! I think that's a really underrated song from them; it's close to as good as the Witch's Ghost songs.

I got a good laugh out of Witch's Ghost being so bad for you that it doesn't even make your list, it's just automatically disqualified haha. What do you hate about it so much?

Oh it's a good song I can't deny that. You stated the reason in your list. They are clearly not the same singers and the vibe is off. It's also why It's a Mystery is so low because it is Velma singing with very little of the Hex Girls in the background.

WildwindVampire link
5/3/2023 12:12:27 pm

It oddly works for me even if it's not the same singers, I thought they did a good job. It is strange that they replaced the usual voice actresses for just one song in the credits though.

I feel like it would be very hard to be worse than "Scooby Snacks" so I'm also very surprised haha. In hindsight, Mr Neither's comment makes me feel like I should have disqualified "Scooby Snacks" because I totally agree with you about it being nearly unlistenable lol.

Mr Neither
5/3/2023 03:46:28 am

Witch's Ghost was not disqualified because it was bad but because to me it doesn't feel like a Hex Girl song. It is clearly different singers and a whole different vibe.

To show just how bad Scooby Snacks is though, It's a Mystery still placed higher despite the Hex Girls just being backup vocals.

I did not expect to see Petrified Bride as 2, certainly an interesting choice. Its always been a bit forgettable for me as a song, not entirely sure why. I found their version of the What's New Scooby Doo theme song more memorable.

Surprised you didn't put Those Meddlin' Kids or It's a Mystery higher. Interesting Jennifer Hale may have sung Those Meddlin' kids, given there's this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXi76csNu3o Which I've been forgetting to link to you for a while now since I found this clip again earlier in the year.

Also whilst I hate Good Bad Girls and especially Trap of Love (both rather bland), I quite liked the new version of Hex Girl which plays at the beginning of In Fear of the Phantom. Shame there's no version out there (to my knowledge) with the gang talking over it cut out. Its different, but still really good. I also like SDMI's version of Earth, Wind, Fire and Air too...for all the few seconds we got to hear it.

I've always enjoyed "Petrified Bride," it's such a fun little chase song even if it is quite short. Interesting, for me it's the opposite. "Petrified Bride" is much more memorable to me than their What's New Scooby-Doo cover.

Oh wow, that's really interesting! I could definitely see Jennifer providing Velma's singing voice for that song, as they had somebody different provide Velma's singing voice for the Where Are You theme song in the Legend of the Vampire film. I enjoy all of my top 11, so it was hard to choose between some of them. Ultimately the soundtrack songs have always been less memorable than the ones that did appear in the movies to me, hence why they're a bit lower.

I also liked the new version "Hex Girl" at the beginning of "In Fear of the Phantom." I remember you linked me to a version of "Who Do Voodoo" that had the conversation over the song cut out, so maybe somebody will create a version someday that edits out the talking so we can hear a clearer portion of the song.

I meant Jennifer Hale providing the singing voice for Those Meddlin' Kids, rather than Velma in its a Mystery. Though admittedly I wasn't too clear in that comment. Partially since the singer's for Those Meddlin' Kids does sound like the same singing voice she does for Thorn in other songs, backed up by how she sings part of it perfectly in that clip. But also since it seems odd that she would've remembered it otherwise in 2012 unless she'd sung it, given how it was just a song on a CD rather than a movie or episode she worked on. Also the CD's credits aren't clear who sung what in the first place as all the songs vocals are just listened as by "The Hex Girls", who have eight women listed as provided their voices. So quite possible at least one song was provided by their actual voice actresses...which is odd they didn't do that anyway for all of them, especially given they specifically picked an actual singer do Dusk voice in the first place.

That's fair on the soundtrack songs being less memorable, especially if you hadn't heard them till relatively recently. Compared to me where (being Hex Girls obsessed) I came across them when I got back in Scooby Doo in 2013, so I've heard them a decent bit since then. Except Its a Mystery, since for some reason I never downloaded a mp3 of it then, only did after you used it in your fanfic. I'm not sure why as its really great, well bar the Velma and Shaggy dialogue but that's needed otherwise the listener has no idea the song is about her feelings for Ben Ravencroft. Though it would've been slightly funny otherwise, having all these Scooby Doo themed songs and then a random love song in the middle. Still less random than the Scooby Doo Where Are You Instrumental Mix the CD has, which is completely random and sort of awful yet I love it because of that. It just reminds me of the sort of thing people would make when messing around on audio software on computers in the 90s/early 2000s. Which reminds me I need to find my copy of the CD, since I've misplaced it.

Certainly possible, I do it myself but I don't really understand how muting/cutting out specific pieces of overlaying audio from audio like that. Though I guess its similar to how there's some automatic programs which can try to cut out all background noise for a voice clip. One day though hopefully we'll get it.

WildwindVampire link
5/3/2023 07:22:10 pm

Ah, my mistake, I read your comment wrong when I originally responded. In that case, yes, it does sound like she provided the voice in "Those Meddlin' Kids." She also says "that was one of our earlier ones" in the video you linked, which would lead me to believe it has to be her. I'm really surprised she sang that one tbh. It seems like such an obscure choice, especially given the crowd didn't seem to be Hex Girls super fans.

I'd never listened to any of the soundtrack songs until I wrote my fanfic in late 2021. I don't particularly feel I was missing out other than "It's a Mystery" and maybe "Those Meddlin' Kids." I had never listened the Where Are You instrumental mix before, and I think it's safe to say I'll never be listening to it again lol. That is easily one of the most bizarre pieces of music I have ever listened to. Almost feels like the writers were on some sort of hallucinogenic trip of some sort there, as I don't know what else would inspire somebody to create such a bizarre, trippy instrumental like that lol. Shaggy exclaiming "Shake it Scoob!" in the middle was also particularly offputting haha.

I don't know how to use it either, but I know there is some audio production software out there where you can silence certain background noises and effects.

Hi Thomas, I'm guessing probably mid to late 2024 if they're releasing it in 2025. With some of the past series, we've gotten announcements at least several months in advance. I remember with Guess Who, we found out the title of the series a couple of years in advance due to somebody accidentally posting a picture of the cast where the name of the script could be read, so it would be cool if something like that happened again so we could know the name early.

Gotta love the Girls.

Really unpopular opinion here - I've never been sold on Earth Wind Fire & Air.
I do however love the vibe of Those Meddling Kids.
Like others I'd love to hear a more complete Good Bad Girls, but I suspect it doesn't exist as the same writer did Yer Dead Right Mate for RB&TS - my guess he wrote the medley as heard.
But #1 for me is Trap of Love.

That is a surprising opinion! Yeah, I'd also like to hear a more complete "Good Bad Girls" version, but unfortunately I doubt that will happen as they probably didn't take the time to write a full song; they just wrote what they needed to use for the episode.

I know this is an old post now, but I wanted to leave this here for anyone who would stumble upon this and read the comments! I just made my own worst to best list of the Hex Girls discography.

Hex Girls Songs Ranked Worst to Best:
13. Love’s Curse
-Where to begin… this song is horrible. It’s just really awkward in pacing and speed, with the song feeling more random than a true great rock song. And it’s super hard to even judge this song on its own merits because the sound mixing is so messed up. I genuinely do not understand how they could release the episode as-is because the singing does not sound remotely like it is coming from the same room that the instruments are coming from, drowning the instruments out and allowing the singing portions to sound like they’re coming from inside a small room. And on top of that, Luna sounds really off and the singing in general sounds like they’re feigning being loud. Idk how to explain this over a text-based medium and not in person, but they don’t sound like they are actually belting their lyrics but are trying to keep their voices low but give the illusion of belting? Idk, but this is easily their worst song.

12. What’s New Scooby-Doo?
-Just sounds really weird to me, I’ve never been a big fan of the Hex Girls cover of this theme song. Which, to me, is the fault of the studio for making this not sound perfect cause it should work.

11. Who Do Voodoo?
-This song is a bit catchy, but I don’t like how quiet it sounds and I think it ultimately is too repetitive to really be a great song, even if the fandom remembers this one well.

10. The Witch’s Ghost
-This song is fine, but I think it’s just kind of unmemorable.

9. Petrified Bride
-Not perfect, but this song is pretty catchy and fun, and I think that the lyrics are a bit funny, if out of tone with the Hex Girls’ usual kind of music.

8. Zoinks
-A super fun and catchy song. A bit too repetitive and I don’t love Scott Innes’ inclusions, but I still sing this a lot.

7. Those Meddlin’ Kids
-I know a lot of people who adore this song, and it is truly great I must say! I can’t rank it higher because of how much I love the other songs tho

6. Scooby Snacks
-One thing I really like about the Hex Girls songs and the Witch’s Ghost CD is that the songs don’t play like normal songs you would hear on a kids’ album. The CD songs especially have an almost otherworldly vibe to them and they carry the DNA of indie music in them and I really appreciate that. This one’s a great example of that

5. The Good Bad Girls
- I don’t have much to say here, just an awesome song! I think it would have been better if You’re Dead Right Mate fit better with this one to create an awesome harmony, but I also understand the two songs harmonizing would defeat the purpose of them combatting lol

4. Trap of Love
- I always forget how much I genuinely love this song, it’s so awesome and I think Grey Delisle is amazing in this! This song reminds me of music you don’t really hear anymore because, ya know, eras of music change. But it’s always a blast to hear!

3. Hex Girl
-Iconic and genuinely rocking. If I’m being honest, I think the problem with Legend of the Vampire, What’s New, and Guess Who? are that they all have songs that don’t really feel like real songs? Either the instruments are toned down (Love’s Curse) or the singing feels muted (Who Do Voodoo?), but SDMI and Witch’s Ghost (plus CD) have songs that feel like real genuine songs that a real band would have performed!

2. It’s a Mystery
-Super underrated song. It evokes a very specific feeling, it feels unconventional for a kids movie soundtrack song, it’s a nice insight into Velma’s emotions that the movie only teases a bit, and it’s just a really great song!

1. Earth, Wind, Fire, & Air
-Makes me feel nostalgic, rockin’, melancholic, and a whole mix of emotions that rise to the elevate this one to my number one Hex Girl song. It’s just all the things I love about their music!

I really enjoyed reading your rankings!

11. I had this conversation with a friend a couple of years ago, but I don't understand why they created this whole song just to have only a small part of it play. It's possible that they only wrote that part of it, but there's clearly a part of the verses that play in the background while characters are talking and the vampires appear, which has always confused me. I can't remember where I saw it, but I know there is a version out there where somebody edited the talking/vampire noises into the background so the verse could be better heard, and I thought it improved the song a lot (and I already liked it to begin with).

2. Cool to see this one so high! Although I don't love it as much as you, I agree that it's neat how it hones in a specific feeling that a character felt that isn't explored in the movie.
