This morning, Netflix shared a few exciting news tidbits about the upcoming live-action series! Netflix posted on Instagram that the series will be titled Scooby-Doo: Origins. This title had already been rumored by Production List for the past couple months, but it is now confirmed to be the series' official title.

Netflix also confirmed this morning that production has officially started on the series! Variety shared that filming is happening in Atlanta, and that the series will be a "modern reimagining" of the Scooby-Doo franchise. The Variety article also officially confirms Paul Walter Hauser's role as Scooby-Doo's owner.

Alongside this announcement, the first promotional image for the series has been posted. This image reveals that Mckenna has dyed her hair red for her role. Mckenna posted a TikTok with the hair reveal, featuring one of Sarah Michelle Gellar's lines as Daphne from the first Scooby-Doo live-action film. Check out the promotional image above!

this is going to be an amazing show i feel, i'm excited for it

only complaint i have is i'm not super huge on the name i get it's an origin story but come on "Scooby-Doo Origins" sounds a little generic, but at the same time i guess they can't use Mystery Begins since another origin story called dibs on that title lol

but anyway this does sound like it will be a major comeback for Scooby-Doo cause we all know he needs to return, i hope we get a release date at some point by the end of the year

I'm glad they at least didn't just call it "Scooby-Doo". I don't like when franchises do that cuz it's just not specific enough. Even the 2002 Scooby-Doo movie itself can't be called by just its title lol.

Surely it will have to be a summer 2027 release; the production schedule and the setting in the show lend themselves to it.

I'm really excited for this show too! The info and promo we've gotten for this has been really strong. It seems like it's going to be a great series! I agree with you that this seems like a great show to make Scooby's big comeback after three years of no shows/movies other than Velma. It's so weird to me that the last Scooby show was five years ago at this point.

I'm not too bothered by the name, but I don't disagree it's a little generic. It's simple but it works well imo.

By the time it comess out it will have been roughly 3 years of no shows or movies even counting Velma.

@Becker Oh god, yeah, just calling it "Scooby-Doo (2027)" would have been frustrating lol. I think you're right on the release date.

They look good! Redhead Mckenna with the headband was much anticipated. The hairstyle on Maxwell reminds me of Prinze in the 2002 movie. Tanner's got that expression down really well. I don't care about no goatee, they're like 14-15 lol, Abby's styling certainly doesn't come across as older than that. We'll probably see them grow into their more iconic attires, I imagine. Scooby himself probably won't be revealed for a while due to the CGI needed for a talking dog, though I wonder how he'll look as a more realistic puppy.

"Scooby-Doo: Origins" definitely fits with the whole premise of this season. I'm curious what Netflix's planning map is though; if they hope it is a hit and are able to do several seasons then the title will become increasingly less suitable. And also what direction they'll take the storytelling down the line considering this season is all about one mystery at this camp (which still gives me 80s slasher vibes as a setting lol). A lot to speculate.

Yeah that's my thing with the title as well, if the show goes on for a handful of seasons (which I hope it does, if it's good) the whole 'origins' part makes less sense. And I also get summer slasher vibes from the setting! I wonder if we'll see nods to some of the more popular ones like Friday the 13th. If I had to guess, I assume there will be some teasing of lore that connects to Crystal Cove or Coolsville or whatever their hometown is, or something like the supernatural part of the show having origins in their hometown so they can continue the mystery there in future seasons.

I wonder if they'll perhaps have other subtitles for each season? Sounds like a long shot though. I'm hoping in the future they can go more in the direction of having episodic villains but also a season-long overarching mystery. SDMI did that brilliantly. Idk if this particular mystery would carry on through more seasons, but bringing the gang back to their hometown after camp is obviously gonna happen.

I'm also hoping for an SDMI-like combo of an overarching mystery spread across episodic villains. I think it would work really well for a show like this. It'd be kinda weird if the show's name changed with every single season. I hope they don't take it in that direction

Agreed all four actors look really good! Mckenna's look still needs to grow on me a bit. It's ironic because she's the actress I'm most excited for, but I wouldn't say I'm crazy about how she looks in the image above. I'm withholding judgement though until we actually see the show. The others look really good to me, I particularly like Maxwell and Abby's looks! I'm guessing you're right on Scooby. We probably won't see that image for at least another few months.

I was thinking about that too. Depending on how complex they make the origin story, I think it could work for multiple seasons. It will really depend what direction they take the show though. I could see it still fitting down the line if future seasons feel like a natural continuation/expansion of the origin story from the first season.

For me the only thing that's a bit of a grower is Velma's hairstyle, since I thought they would give her bangs. It's nothing egregious though. Also it seems they're wearing some kind of white camp uniform here, so I wonder when or how much we'll see them in the more iconic outfits.

Fundamentally it still wouldn't fit to say "origins" if they're on a 4th season or whatever though lol. And I doubt they'd stretch this gang formation story past the first season cuz that's just not ideal. Everything that went on at this csmp probably be dealt with by the time they leave.

It will be interesting to see if they wear the camp clothes for the whole series! It's hard to imagine we'd never see them in their classic outfits, but maybe they'll limit it to a scene leading up to camp in the first episode or something. Idk.

Fair point. It would be awesome if the series ran that long, but not sure how likely it is. I think Origins could work for two or three seasons, but I agree with you anything beyond that would probably feel like a bit of a stretch.

They really are making sure this series is promoted!! Love the first look, and I adore the glasses Abby has on. Not sure if I love the title of the show, but it's not terrible.

Abby looks the best of the group to me too! She looks like a perfect Velma! I wouldn't say I'm crazy about the title either, but I also think its simplicity works well for what it is.

Tough to say but I might just barely give it to Maxwell personally. That's just so Fred

I am not sure I am a big fan of the name “Scooby Doo: Origins”, but I guess at least it is specific enough where we can just refer to it as Origins rather than something even more generic

I’m excited and hopeful overall

Yeah constantly saying "the live-action series" was a bit long-winded.

Whatever the quality of the actual show will be, I'm at least confident the cast will kill it.

My thoughts are the same. I'd say I like the title enough, but I think they could have found a better one. I could see a scenario where they change the name before the show comes out.

The "Netflix Live-Action Series" category on the blog would need to be retitled btw!

Ooh good catch! I changed the title everywhere else on the site, but totally forgot about that category lol. Wish the site editor had an easier way to retitle categories. There isn't any way to update the title, so I had to go through and manually delete all of the "Netflix live-action series" tags and create a new tag in its place.

I wonder if this is an outfit she'll wear at some point in the show. It might be. Impossible to pull off the animation charm of having one attire in every scene of a show in live-action, so variety is to be expected.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how much they change outfits! I hope they wear similar outfits to their classic looks instead of the camp attire in the above photo all season.

The gang looks amazing!!! I think velma should've cut her hair a little more and Shaggy's hair is kinda weird but otherwise it's great!!!

I'm actually okay with Velma having long hair, but I get why you'd feel that way since it's different from what we've usually seen!

I still don't have much faith in the storyline they are going with but I am glad they are making an effort for the cast to actually look like the gang.

Yeah, I agree they did a great job with the casting. I'll refrain from judging until we see more, but as it is currently, I'd rank this as my second favorite live-action cast above the original (which is really strong for me other than Freddie Prinze Jr.).

Part of me feels this series got the go ahead because WB planned to sell themselves of to Netflix. I'm really interested in it but worry what the merger might do to it's longevity, i.e. WB pulling the plug as soon as possible.

Reply
Becker
4/25/2026 04:10:02 am

That's not the case cuz it's been in development for 2 years (a year and a half before WB decided to look to sell again) and has been in the pitching process since 2021 (before WB and Discovery even merged) according to reliable scoopers. WB have licensed various properties out to various studios over the years, be it for production or to stream, and it's really not an uncommon thing.

Totally understand your worry about that after the past few years, but personally I don't think it will be an issue. Considering the project has survived multiple mergers, I don't think WB is concerned about cutting it since it's being produced by Netflix. They wouldn't be putting all this press/promo into it if they were already planning on giving it the axe immediately. Also worth noting that I think it would be pretty terrible press if Ellison made a Zaslav-like decision right out of the gate of the merger.

The axe? That's not true, WildWindVampire. I'm serious.

(To myself): I really need to do something about my life and live that to the full.

I think you may have misread my comment. "The axe" is an expression that means getting cancelled, and I was just saying that I don't think WB will cancel the live-action series given they've been promoting it a lot already.
