Given there's been so much discussion of the upcoming series Velma, I thought I'd share my thoughts on it. So far, we know very little about the show. The show will center around Velma navigating high school, trying to understand her sexuality, and working to solve the mystery of a serial killer that's in her town. Velma will be of East Asian decent and Shaggy, Fred and Daphne will appear. Scooby will not appear in the show. The show will be will be an adult-oriented comedy and be on HBO Max.
That's all we know about the show at this moment, which is not a lot. That's why it makes me a little sad to see that many people are judging the series pretty harshly despite us barely knowing anything about it yet. Granted, I totally get why people might be skeptical since this series is exploring the characters from such a different way than we've ever seen before. However, my personal thoughts are that I don't think we can really judge the series very well yet, since we don't know enough. I don't think there's any way to really know enough about what the show will be like until the series comes out for people to watch. I've seen a lot of comments on social media saying that "this show is going to destroy the characters forever" and "my childhood is ruined!," which seems very similar to what people said about Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!. People freaked out over the art style when it first came out, but in reality, a lot of us ended up really enjoying the show and got used to the art style. This is why I think we can't fairly judge the show too harshly from knowing so little right now. Maybe people are right. Maybe the show will be absolutely terrible. Even if the show isn't good, the worst thing that can happen is that you skip this series and wait for the next. Every new series seems to explore some different aspect of the franchise, and Velma happens to be exploring something completely different than we've seen before. Just like with any other show, it's not going to be for everyone, but it doesn't have to affect your view of the rest of the franchise. While I don't intend to offend anyone, I do think comments like "this is going to ruin the entire franchise forever", I won't be able to watch Scooby ever again after this show" or "this show is going to destroy my childhood" are a bit extreme. As far as I know, WB isn't breaking into people's houses and stealing everyone's Scooby DVDs when Velma is released so fans can never watch the old series again. Even if you think this new series is awful, you can just ignore it, and it doesn't have to affect your view of the franchise as a whole. Almost positively, there's going to be another normal Scooby show for kids again that you can enjoy. This is why I don't understand why people are posting such extreme things about Velma and saying Scooby is going to ruin the franchise completely, because if you liked Scooby before, it's not going to wreck all the rest of the series for you. You'll still have them to enjoy, just like you always did. Who knows, maybe Velma will surprise you and you'll enjoy it, but you'll never know unless you give it at least a fair chance of, at the very least, watching part of an episode. In conclusion, I completely understand people being skeptical about this show because it is exploring such uncharted territory. I'm not saying that people shouldn't have an opinion on the show. It's normal to be uncertain when an aspect of your favorite franchise is changed, and it makes sense that people would feel cautious about the show. However, I think there's a difference between being skeptical and being negative to such an extreme extent that you're already writing off the show before it even starts. Assuming it's going to ruin the characters forever is a bit far-fetched at this point, and I think we all should remember many of our initial reactions to Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! before going to the extreme and trying to convince everyone that the show is going to be our worst nightmare. All we can do is be patient until the show comes out at this point, so we may as well just remain open to whatever happens and wait to judge the show until we are able to see it.

Yeah I agree I hate these comments even if you don't like a certain thing from the franchise don't act like it destroyed the franchise their will always be another series or another dtv movie its not like WB is holding you at gun point and forcing you to watch the scooby doo stuff you don't like I'm not saying you can't critise anything scooby doo related if you don't like that scooby doo thing thats fine but don't act like it destroyed the franchise and don't overract to something we barely have any news about.

Thank you, and I totally agree. There's a difference between being skeptical or critical, and overreacting to something we know nothing about and/or saying the franchise is going to go down in flames because of it is a bit ridiculous.

Well constructed and mostly agree, though I would argue there is a risk to this being bad, scooby has gone dormant before, and I feel we're close to another era of that.

Thank you! There's definitely a risk to this being bad as is any series, my point in the article was just to say that I feel the comments saying "Scooby is definitely going to go dormant/die off as a franchise because of this" are pretty extreme, because we really have no idea of what's going to happen yet.

Yea that's what worries me too, as I said I just don't like the idea of something for adults running in a series that's more all ages, it's part of why I hate Star Trek Discovery and Picard, there's just... no reason there should be a show in this franchise I should not be able to show to my kids (if I had any) especially if the franchise has historically been all ages. 6/13/2021 09:05:47 am
Yeah, I get what you mean. It's a big change for them to shift the demographic from kids to adults only. I totally agree that I wouldn't want something super gory or Family Guy humor. That would probably be the only thing that would prevent me from watching the series.

I empathize with your sentiment on the franchise being for children, but I don’t think that should creatively limit people who have more mature ideas of what to do with the franchise. Scoobynatural, the Harvey Birdman episode, Scooby Apocalypse, more or less the first live-action movie (before being butchered in editing). If a child can’t watch one small fraction of a part of the 50+ -year spanning franchise, then it’s hard for me to feel all that sorry for them personally. They’ll grow up one day, no one is banned from seeing any of the shows for life. My only thoughts with it being adult is that parents aren’t going to be discerning or careful and kids will watch this without knowing it is for an older audience.

I feel that's different however, Harvey Birdman and supernatural are separate shows (I'd also argue scoobynatural wasn't all that good either, but that's a separate issue), And that is your prerogative, but the other part is not just can't watch, is if I feel it goes against what I believe is the heart of the series, and I believe the heart of scooby is all ages and fun.

Agreed. I'm gonna check the show out when it releases. You'll never know how a show is until you watch it!

Another question people have is whether they'll premiere another Scooby show (this one for kids) while Velma is still releasing new episodes. We've never had two Scooby shows overlap one another, which is interesting to think about.

I'm not sure! If that SCOOB! project that Tony Cervone hinted at a week ago is a TV series, I would say maybe as soon as next year, since that seems to already be in development. We actually have had two Scooby shows overlap each other if you count Scooby's All-Star Laff-a-Lympics and The Scooby-Doo Show.

Yeah, I don't really count Laff-a-Lympics as an actual Scooby show, it's more of just a Hanna-Barbera Universe show that includes Scooby-Doo characters. 6/12/2021 11:38:27 am
Fair. Then yeah, there's never been two Scooby shows airing at the same time.

The idea of this show has just never been that appealing to me, I haven't really been excited for it so far. And it's weird that I actually never had an issue with Be Cool, even before it aired. I was indifferent to the artstyle. And I wonder what artstyle they'll go for with Velma.

It should be interesting to see the art style of Velma! It's funny, I was actually nervous for Be Cool when the art style was posted, but I ended up being blown away by how great the show was when it aired. It totally makes since that you'd be skeptical about the show given how different it is. I was more just trying to argue in my post that there's no reason to be alarmist about the show, and already write it off or say it's going to be so bad that it will end the franchise.

I guess it's just that everything we've heard about this show this year has made me go "wut".

I wonder if the show will get a physical media release at all. I hope it doesn't get buried solely to steaming sites given that this a adult Scooby series. Othewise WB may decide to never bother releasing it on DVD at all.

Hmm...I'm not sure. I would hope it would, but I could also see them leaning in the direction of only posting it on streaming services.

I think you're right. Be Cool has shown us that if something doesn't sell well, WB will stop releasing DVDs of that show. We still haven't even gotten a season 2 release for Be Cool.
