Missing Segment from Secret of Shark Island Resurfaces Online After 52 Years

In "The Secret of Shark Island" from The New Scooby-Doo Movies, there is a scene in which Shaggy and Scooby reference going on a dumbwaiter, except the audience never sees it. I had personally always wondered if perhaps it was just a deleted scene, but we have some surprising news today reveals that it was not. After over 50 years of being lost, a missing scene from the episode featuring Shaggy and Scooby using the dumbwaiter has been posted online. This clip was posted on YouTube by Chorake from the ScoobyAddicts forum, who is the same person that found the missing scene featuring Batman's speech on counterfeiting from "The Dynamic Scooby-Doo Affair" back in May 2020. You can check it out in the YouTube video above. An advertisement for "The Secret of Shark Island" from a 1970s airing was also posted, which you can check out below. Interestingly, the advertisement refers to it as "The Secret of Hark Island," but it's unclear if this is a typo or not.

That's actually a pretty cool scene. Never thought I'd ever hear a sound like that come out of Daphne though lmao.

I enjoyed the scene too! Yeah, that was a very odd sound lol.

Saw the advert last night but not the first video. Opens up a whole can of worms and the question just what else might have been lost from some of these episodes. King Kong I believe from Sandy Duncan, I think a skeleton? From Addams family?

I was thinking about that too, particularly the mummy scene in The Addams Family. Looking at the runtimes for the episodes, that may also give us a clue as to which episodes have something lost. Most episodes are 43 minutes, but there are a few that were only 41, including "The Dynamic Scooby-Doo Affair" and "The Secret of Shark Island." I would guess the 41-minute episodes are the ones that have lost footage. Sandy Duncan and Addams Family are also 41 minutes, which would line up with the theory that there's missing scenes from those. These are the episodes that are only 41 minutes:

The Dynamic Scooby-Doo Affair
Wednesday Is Missing
A Good Medium Is Rare
Sandy Duncan's Jekyll and Hydes
The Secret of Shark Island
The Haunted Horseman of Hagglethorn Hall
The Phantom of the Country Music Hall

Also, it'd be crazy if the gargoyle from the Phyllis Diller episode actually did get unmasked in a missing scene that we never saw.

Wow, I had noticed that a few episodes seemed shorter than others and felt something may have been missed but with this new evidence and the way things line up, it seems almost certain there is more lost footage. Furthermore, from what I can gather this slots in at 17:00 in the episode, although it still seems a little confusing, one minute Fred and the girls are hearing the shark demon behind them, next moment they have totally ignored it and checking out Velma and Daphne's window.

I thought that was a little awkward too. I hadn't paid attention before, it's kinda weird that they cut off the wine cellar scene in the middle of Shaggy's comment. In the part that didn't get cut, Shaggy starts by saying "However, this seems to be a wine cellar" which implies that Shaggy should have said something connected to that thought before it (which we now know he did from the missing scene).

Do you happen to have any idea about if there were any places for future episodes/second season of The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo back in the day?

Because they were just missing 1 (2) ghosts... after they got him... what? They'd have the change the title of the series. Stuff like that makes me think that maybe 13G was never meant to be concluded. They just were given a 13 episode show and just said "uhhh call it 13 ghosts of scooby-doo because it has 13 episodes that makes sense"

I knew at one point there were 2 or 3 more episodes listed on Wikipedia that possibly could have not been made. But these have since disappeared, possibly proven false or unable to be proven.

These were the "lost episodes": https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_13_Ghosts_of_Scooby-Doo&diff=next&oldid=361611179

Admittedly, it looks super fake to me. According to those airdates, somehow these final lost episodes would have aired on a Sunday and a Friday, and looking back in the history, it looks like the person who added them switched the dates a bunch too and originally said they aired in September, then later changed them to December. My guess would be that somebody added them as a joke/prank.

That's very interesting though! The names of the ghosts and the episodes lowkey fit. If it was a troll, it was one that actually cared/was a fan of the show lol

Tom gave an explanation for it in an interview with Scoobypedia: "We did not anticipate that the series would be cancelled after 13 episodes. We were ready to make more...and we were under the impression the series would be renewed. There was a money issue that prevented the renewal."

I do think it would have been very odd to have another season with just one or two ghosts, though, so I'm a bit confused by his explanation.

I can only assume the one remaining ghost was going to reopen the chest in the season 2 premiere, mirroring how it had been opened in the season 1 premiere too. And this time there would've maybe been a different approach with the ghosts actually working together instead of separately, to keep things fresh and pose a new challenge or something. I find it hard to believe they could've spent 13 episodes chasing one ghost as an overarching plot after breezing through the rest with each episode.

Yeah not a fan of that explanation.

I feel like the only possible thing was what Becker said.
Or somehow, create new ghosts that replace the old ones or something. IDK. Either way, weird.

Yeah, I think Becker's explanation is probably the most likely. I agree with you that something about the explanation seems a bit off. The past four Scooby series were only 13 episodes, so it's strange they would have made the first season believing it would be automatically renewed for a second. Maybe there was some behind-the-scenes thing we didn't know about though.

I think Ruegger and the crew must have been told they were going to be renewed early on by the execs. However, once they were too late into production, the execs changed their tune and decided it was worth continuing the show due to whatever those money issues were and pulled the plug. So the show couldn't get a proper conclusion due to the blindside being too sudden and too late to change the last episode. That's how Ruegger's statement reads to me, they were confident the show would continue and then it just wasn't anymore due to the studio cancelling it when they originally weren't going to.

I don't think Ruegger should've expected 13 Ghosts to only end up being 13 episodes long. It's still the shortest Scooby show ever after 55 years, it's hard to predict something like that. '83-'84 were not really different shows, the title of that series had just been rebranded basically; which is something Hanna-Barbera loved doing with Scooby every year for a decade in '76-'85. The only difference was Fred and Velma coming back as recurring characters. Since Ruegger was the head writer of the franchise since '83, he would've known first hand how much that situation was a rebrand or a separate series. And it looks like he wasn't bothered by or wary of it.

It was NOT worth continuing*

Huh, I was always under the impression the series wasn't renewed due to lack of interest. To be honest they could have made a killing from toy figures if they thought about it.

That's a good point, maybe he was told the series would probably go on for multiple seasons and they pulled the plug at the last minute or something.

Hi. I would like to clarify matters of context:

When the first season of The New Scooby-Doo Movies was rebroadcasted on CBS in 1973, these airings used shorter, 41-minute edits of what were originally 43-minute episodes, in order to allocate more ad space. For the show's entry into weekday syndication in 1980, Hanna-Barbera elected to split the hour timeslot episodes into half-hour two-parters, and these syndicated versions restored the segments that were missing from the '73 airings (while also sometimes cutting material that was always present in the CBS runs). When the hour timeslot versions of the episodes were resurrected for the cable broadcasts on USA and later the Turner networks, these versions were, by the majority of episodes, sadly the 41-minute versions. When Warner released their 15 episode collection in 2005, the season 1 episodes, with the notable exception of The Dynamic Scooby-Doo Affair, were restored to their original 43-minute lengths. However, when Warner issued 8 of the remaining episodes in 2019, the affected season 1 episodes were still the 41-minute versions. Thus, these missing segments are only available from old off-air recordings of the syndicated run. We're still missing the footage cut from the Phyllis Diller, Sandy Duncan, Davy Jones and Jerry Reed episodes.

Thanks for clarifying that! I wasn't aware of that, but that totally makes sense. I'm curious as to why they didn't restore "The Dynamic Scooby-Doo Affair" in the original set. The only things I can think of is perhaps they thought kids would be bored by Batman's speech about the harms of counterfeiting, or somehow the master tape was damaged and they had to use the cut tape. Anyway, I'm hopeful we get to see the other missing scenes someday!

That is an amazing scene, not quite as amazing as the Dynamic Scooby Doo Affair scene, but would like to see it in the episode. Really hoping we get the rest of them, I’m personally especially interested in seeing the ones for Hagglethorn Hall and Country Music Hall

I agree with you the "Dynamic Scooby-Doo Affair" one was a little better, but this one was great too. I'd say I am most curious to see the scene from "A Good Medium Is Rare," just because I am wondering if the gargoyle actually was unmasked. Second would be "Wednesday Is Missing" and third would be "Haunted Horseman of Hagglethorn Hall." I hope we get all the missing scenes at some point though.

Honestly, the A Good Medium Is Rare clip is very intriguing just for the possibility that it could actually make the episode make some sort of sense, because it really does not in its current state lol despite me liking it anyway

Yes! I agree with the Davy Jones and Jerry Reed missings segments in that they may actually be very significant. Can anyone remember and can anyone try to describe this missing footage. It would seem to me there is another scene in the tunnel with Fred shaggy an d scooby before the scene with the grandfather clock in the Davy Jones episode.
