Fun Fact of the Week #582

Today's fun fact comes from a movie I enjoyed watching over the weekend! Four years prior to his Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? episode, Sean Astin and Kate Micucci worked together on the 2017 film Unleashed. In the film, Sean plays Carl, who is a love interest for Kate's character Emma. The film's plot involves Emma's pet cat and dog being turned into humans by magic. The film is rated PG-13 for some mature humor, but I would highly recommend this film to any older fans. Despite a somewhat odd premise, it ended up being a cute movie!

As a "bonus" fun fact about Sean Astin, I found out when writing this up that apparently he played two characters in season 1 of Guess Who prior to being an official guest. He was also the deliveryman and stagehand in "I Put a Hex on You!".

The font for the show "Scooby-Doo! and Guess Who?" (including the end credits) is that of Dom Casual.

I wonder if that font is always used worldwide?

Thanks for the fun fact! It's interesting to learn that the voice actors of Scooby-Doo sometimes appear in live-action films. I'd already read that Mathew Lilliard played the villain in Five Nights at Freddy's. He'll reprise the role in the sequel, scheduled for December 5, 2025. It's not a franchise I enjoy, but I remember that despite disastrous reviews, Five Nights at Freddy's did very well at the box office. The film ranked among the top five highest-grossing horror films during their opening weekend, hence the second installment in development. This could be encouraging for Meet the Flintstones. If many fans of the franchise go to see it in theaters, the film should be profitable, and Warner Bros. will be tempted to revive the Flintstones. Perhaps this is something that was missing for Scooby-Doo. I think Scoob! It had a respectable financial result, but since Monsters Unleashed didn't manage to earn as much as Scooby-Doo 1, the plan for a third lie-action film was abandoned. This might explain why we have so few Scooby-Doo movies released in theaters.

I also liked that monsters from The Scooby-Doo Show appeared in Monsters Unleashed, especially since they were even more menacing than in their original episodes. The Tar Monster was certainly the most problematic, but the skeletons were also more developed.

It's true that Fred is a sinner in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo and What's New. I imagine the writers wanted to present a more arrogant version of Fred because of his previous successes, or perhaps it was simply a reason for the gang to break up. It's a bit strange that Velma and Fred have an ego clash in Scooby-Doo 1. I don't see how that can develop the story, since we all already know the gang is still very close-knit. Thanks for your opinion :)

Thanks for the information! It seems that the 4 Kids Favorites of A Pup Named Scooby-Doo also contains 4 discs. I couldn't find this information on any Scooby or Hanna-Barbera fandom sites, so I just checked on eBay where it said that this DVD contains 4 discs… I think it's safe to say that Warner Bros. has definitely changed how they sell the 4 Kids Favorites.

Velma's personality in What's New is also my favorite! That's where she's the most developed and natural. I didn't like her personality in Mystery Incorporated either. She's colder, but I can understand that being constantly put down, whether by Shaggy or at the beginning of season 2, could put her in that state. Be Cool is the first version of Velma I knew, and I didn't mind her personality and design too much. Now, I like her characterization a little less here, but I find it decent. I imagine it makes a good contrast with Daphne's personality. Regarding the films, I find it interesting that Velma accepts the existence of real monsters in the revival era, but strongly rejects this element in the later films. It doesn't bother me too much, but I'd like her personality to be less centered on this element in the future.

It's a great idea to include episodes of The New Fred and Barney Show in compilations! It's unfortunately true that several Hanna-Barbera series were similar to Scooby-Doo in the 1970s. I don't know if it would be interesting to include Scooby-Doo-like series in compilations. I agree that A Halloween Hassle at Dracula's Castle and The Flintstones Meet Rockula and Frankenstone have a similar structure, particularly because of the costume party in both. Personally, the Flintstones movie reminds me a lot of A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts because of the laboratory and the monsters.

BTW, Warner Bros. Discovery is up for sale on November 20, 2025, so i wonder if Comcast, Netflix or Paramount-Skydance will make bids for that company, i presume?

I heard about Matthew Lillard being in the Five Nights at Freddy's film! I don't plan to watch the movie either, but I also remember how well it did at the box office despite the bad reviews. It's such a bummer that Scoob's theatrical run never got to happen with the pandemic, but I think their plan of essentially turning it into a DTV worked well for what it was. I'm also glad that the film was released in theaters for a single weekend after the pandemic was over. Obviously, it doesn't make up for the fact that it could have had a full theatrical run, but I thought it was cool that they still gave people a chance to see it even if it was just for a weekend. I will always be curious how well Scoob! would have done with the general public if it would have had a full theatrical run. Since it's been 20 years since Monsters Unleashed's poor box office return, I think if they had the right film idea, it could be profitable for WB to try another theatrical film again. Maybe it could be something for WB to pursue a few years after things settle with the merger.

I've always thought his arrogance was maybe to give the gang more of a reason to break up. Fred being strong-willed and stubborn provided more of a reason for the rest of the gang to disagree with him. I guess the way I see Fred and Velma's ego clash was the writers trying to explore the debate of whether Velma's smarts or Fred's leadership contributed more to the gang, in order for them to realize in the end that both of those qualities are essential to the gang.

Completely agreed her What's New characterization feels most natural. And yeah, Velma's more rational Be Cool characterization balances out Daphne's wackiness really well. I'm with you about having Velma's personality center less on her rejecting real monsters. Boo Brothers #1 Fan and I were just talking about this in another comment section recently, but I feel like having her character focus so heavily on logic makes her feel a bit rigid as a character. I think it also detracts from her other qualities, like her warmth, wittiness, and intuitiveness. I think Goblin King presents a really good example of how to handle her openness to real monsters. The idea of monsters being real is clearly shocking to her, but she isn't over-the-top about it like she is in the more recent films.

I can see why you'd feel "A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts" is similar to Rockula and Frankenstone. The laboratory settings are definitely quite similar! Also, I remembered which Nutcracker Scoob DVD you were talking about in yesterday's comment! I had forgotten about them releasing the Festive Follies Collection, which was essentially a reprint of Winter Wonderdog with other Hanna-Barbera cartoons.
