It is not just recent films that have included Scrappy-deprecating jokes; the Scooby-Doo! Spooky Coaster also includes a joke which bashes Scrappy. In 2018, when the ride was remodeled, a new part was added to the ride in which Shaggy says "you're a bad puppy!" to Scrappy, who is seen in his monster form from the first live action film.

How awesome would be if Spooky Island from the first film was real!?

I remember seeing a petition at one point to put it in Universal Studios in Orlando, but obviously nothing came of it. Would’ve been EPIC though

The only time the "Scrappy bashing" gag made me laugh was The Scooby-Doo Project.

I wouldn't say even that one made me laugh. In my opinion, the first Scrappy joke they made wasn't even funny, and it certainly hasn't gotten any funnier in the past 23 years.

I hate to admit it, but that one kinda made me laugh as well tbh. As well as the first live action movie, which I feel even more guilty about. Other than that though, not only do I disagree with the harsh criticisms, but the joke has gotten old

I'm not sure if either of you saw it as it aired, but I didn't see it until after the live-action film, which is maybe what soured the joke for me. I agree the joke in "The Scooby-Doo Project" is definitely more witty than some of the other ones, and less childish.

I watched it after Scooby-Doo 2002. In that movie I always hated what they did to Scrappy though. I think The Scooby-Doo Project just executed this gag to the best it possibly could be done, felt less mean-spirited and more playful and just satirical. Now, it might have had some bad consequences, considering it was the first Scrappy deprecating joke in the series, might have got the ball rolling in that regards (or maybe not, we dunno, the 2002 film had a much bigger impact mainstream-wise, that's for sure), so setting that bar ain't so good. But still, the joke in isolation was actually funny in The Scooby-Doo Project, something the other instances haven't managed. Some failed HARD AF, like the aforementioned live-action flick or the other TV special we got that included this kind of gag – Where Are You Now. 4/26/2022 01:56:47 pm
You make a great point. It did feel a lot more playful in The Scooby-Doo Project, whereas the handling of Scrappy in the first live-action film was blatantly mean. I think Scooby-Doo (2002) definitely had the biggest impact on those jokes continuing to be used in the mainstream. With Where Are You Now, the Scrappy joke felt actually forced in and childish...same with the "what's a Scrappy?" joke in Curse of the 13th Ghost. Honestly, although I don't care for how Scrappy was handled in it, I think the live-action film at least handled it less childishly than some of the more recent content. It's felt very forced into the plot in recent material, like the "what's a Scrappy?" joke and what happened in Where Are You Now contributed nothing to the overall plot and felt unnatural, at least in my opinion.

My defense of the live action movie is that I have no defense. I just always enjoyed the movie and found it funny as a younger kid, even the Scrappy part. I can’t dislike it that much even now when I know that it probably led to the much worse stuff nowadays 4/26/2022 05:19:18 pm
No reason is a very fair reason haha. While I wouldn't say I love the first live action movie, I certainly don't dislike any aspect of it other than the portrayal of Scrappy. The movie itself is definitely enjoyable for what it is, even if it's not the best Scooby film out there.

Are you saying that having Scrappy be a villain was not a good idea?

Not necessarily, I just think the joke has been overused at this point. I don't think I would have minded it as much if they'd only done it in the live-action film, but they've done so many Scrappy bashing jokes that it's gotten a bit much. That's just my opinion, though.
