Daphne is the first gang member to be kidnapped, in the episode "Hassle in the Castle." Scooby was the second member of the gang to be kidnapped in "Decoy for a Dognapper"; Fred and Velma were kidnapped in "Go Away Ghost Ship" (along with Daphne), and Shaggy was first kidnapped in "Nowhere to Hyde." It's also worth noting that Fred was locked in a trunk in "Bedlam in the Big Top," which could be considered kidnapping.

Interesting that this episode marks the first time a member of the gang other than Daphne was kidnapped.

What constitutes a kidnapping, just out of curiosity? I wonder if Shaggy being taken in Nowhere to Hyde counts and what about Scooby in Decoy for a Dognapper because even if it was planned, the dognappers still had to go through with it.

You're right, I didn't word what I meant well enough. I did mean unplanned kidnappings, but I didn't phrase it that way. I apologize for the confusion and I added that to the post now. Thank you for pointing that out!

Wasn't Fred kidnapped by the Cheese Monster in A Pup?

You're right, I had forgotten about that instance. I updated the post to include this. This will teach me to write a fun fact early in the morning at the last minute (it's been a while since I've done that) haha. I really appreciate you pointing this out!

I always loved the idea of a smuggler in a pterodactyl suit taking 30 mins to etch a really decent likeness of Scooby into a stone wall. An artist at heart! lol

I’m glad they moved away from just Daphne getting kidnapped. It makes for interesting situations!

Me too. The trope would have gotten a bit old if the only gang member to be kidnapped was Daphne for over 50 years.

Just realized that, depending on how much of an actual kidnap it was, Scooby in "Scooby Doo and a Mummy Too" from WAY applies.

Good point, I suppose pretending to turn someone into stone would count as a kidnap. I guess I'd place that more in the "planned kidnappings" category with "Decoy with a Dognapper" but idk.

Nice. That's an invaluable piece of info to track.

That's so cool they keep referencing Scooby! When I first read your comment, I thought "ruh-roh" was an actual trend, but clearly it was just made-up given the next sound trend was exclaiming "ah-ooga" haha. I watched the whole clip and it was super funny, thanks for sending it :)

Yeah the more I think about this one from what everyone's pointed out, I feel like it was a bit of a stretch. I had been inspired by ShadowScooby's comment on the racing thread about Shaggy being kidnapped in "The Spooky Case of the Grand Prix Race," but as others have pointed out, everyone seems to have different ideas of what constitutes a kidnapping. For example, I wouldn't consider the "Spooky Space Kook" example to be a kidnapping, since Fred was just hung up on a hook and not really kidnapped by the Space Kook. "A Night of Fright Is No Delight" didn't really feature anyone kidnapped other than the cousins. So yeah, I think it just comes down to definition. Sorry, I should have thought this one through a bit better.

You say none of the gang were kidnapped in a Night of Fright but what about Scooby and the bathtub. That to me constituted a pretty clear attempt at kidnap even if Scooby managed to escape quickly. And no worries but yeah think this one is down to interpretation. 4/14/2022 11:52:14 am
Yeah, it was definitely an attempted kidnapping. I was more thinking of completed/successful kidnappings for this fun fact, but you make a good point. 4/12/2022 01:39:56 pm
Since you all made a lot of good points, I just rewrote the whole fun fact and included anything that could possibly be considered a kidnapping, rather than being selective about what counted as a planned vs. unplanned kidnapping. I appreciate all of you pointing out the different possible interpretations of this fun fact!

Might I just ask, do we not consider hypnotism kidnapping because I think Shaggy would also be Bedlam in the Bigtop. Or are we just going to class that under attempted murder, lol.

I guess I wouldn't consider hypnotism as kidnapping, since usually it means holding someone against their will (or at least that's the definition I have of it). I'd say this falls more in the attempted murder category lol.

Fair enough but as we've debated here I guess it's open to interpretation

Even if we count the Cheese Monster and the Hypnotizer Clown, there's no denying that the 2002 movie nerfed Fred.

Yah there are other kidnappings that happen before this episode. In fact the first kidnapping of a gang member and it was Daphne’s first kidnapping was in Hassle At The Castle.

Omg how in the world did I forget about that one? lol Thank you so much for mentioning that. I’m traveling at the moment and don’t have my computer with me, so I’ll fix the post tomorrow when I get back.
