Fun Fact of the Week #393

I hope you all had a great weekend! I'm not sure how you all spent it, but I personally spent a lot of this weekend binge watching the new season of Jellystone! It wasn't my intention, but it's such an entertaining show that I couldn't stop watching it haha. Particularly, the episode "Business" is quite possibly the best social commentary on the free market/capitalism I've ever seen in any show, ranging from talking about the balance between government and corporate special interests to how everything has become commercialized and sometimes overly profit-driven...but in a funny, tongue-in-cheek way. Regardless of your political standings, I would absolutely recommend checking out this episode in particular as it's AMAZING and I literally cannot say enough good things about this episode (and the show in general). Anyway, I was thrilled that there were tons of Scooby references in Jellystone season 2, and wanted to make today's fun fact about the series given the new season just came out Thursday.

In the episode "Bleep," Cindy Bear has a milk carton which has a picture of Scrappy as a missing person on the side. Moreover, an animatic in this tweet reveals that an early draft of the episode "Cats Don't Dance" had a missing person poster featuring Scrappy, but it wasn't in the final version of episode, possibly because they put it in this episode instead.

In the episode "Jailcation" (which is another one of my favorite episodes for how hilarious it is), the cop at the Santo Paino Maximum Security Prison is The Creeper.

Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy also watch 5,069 episodes of Scooby-Doo together in the episode "The Big Stink" (although there aren't that many episodes lol).

While it's not directly  Scooby related, the episode "Heroes and Capes" sort of indirectly continues the SCOOB! continuity with Blue Falcon having a very similar personality to how he behaved in that film.

Another episode, "Uh Oh! It's a Burglar," has a whodunnit, person-in-a-mask element to it featuring Jabberjaw and Loopy De Loop. As a side note for those who have seen the episode, the weird Gruesomes movie that's shown for a few seconds is amazing. I would absolutely love to see the full-length movie of Fred sitting on a haunted toilet in the Gruesomes' house, while Mr. Gruesome makes scary food puns haha. I never expected to see The Gruesomes back again, and it was done in such a ridiculous way that it was amazing lol. Easily the most hilarious scene of the series for me.

If you have HBO Max, I would highly recommend checking out Jellystone!, especially if you liked Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!. Despite the different animation, it's such a funny show and is right up my alley when it comes to humor style.

Thanks so much to James for sending me the link to the tweet with the storyboard (as well as providing the Creeper image below before I'd seen the episode).

If anyone's seen the new season of Jellystone! and wants to discuss it, I'd be happy to do so in the comments as if you can't tell I'm super excited about this new season and thought it was incredible lol.

I freakin' LOVE Jellystone!! It's hilarious and is one of my favorite shows! I love the Scooby references. Hopefully we'll see them make appearances.

Glad to meet a fellow Jellystone! fan! It's right up my alley in terms of humor so almost every episode has been amazing for me. There have been a few duds, like a couple of the early Yakky/Augie/Shag episodes and that weird video game one, but for the most part they've been awesome!

Considering there's 40 more episodes to come, I really hope we see Mystery Inc.

I think we will, they're just trying to focus on the Hanna-Barbera characters who haven't had the same 50 year coverage that Scooby-Doo has.

I think could be compared to Batman: The Brave and the Bold, when they held back from showing Superman until they had spent enough time with the lesser known DC characters.

That would be really cool to have Mystery Inc. appear in the show! They've already been mentioned in the context of Augie and Doggie Daddy watching the TV show, but they've broken continuity before, so I could see them ditching the continuity of Scooby-Doo just being a show and making Mystery Inc. appear as regular people. They even have a meta joke at the end of one episode about how the ending made no sense and was full of plotholes lol.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen any episodes. I've been given the opportunity with cartoon sites, but I don't want to take the risks. I've seen lots of amazing images and clips, however.

It's funny how the Teen Angels are now called Young Adult Angels.

I liked that too haha. I know there's no info on when it will come to other countries, but I'd highly recommend watching episodes as soon as you get the chance. There are Hanna-Barbera references (besides the characters) in every episode and it's super fun noticing them. Honestly if they were ever to go through with creating the shared Hanna-Barbera universe they talked about creating with Scoob! (which they seem to have scrapped), this would be the way I'd want them to do it.

I meant to say the new season 2 episodes.

Since young Shaggy's room was full of HB Easter eggs in SCOOB, I hope they continue that just for consistency, instead of just dropping it altogether because they didn't get what they wanted (and honestly never tried that hard to begin with).

Oh gotcha. I agree it would be nice if they continued the Easter eggs in Holiday Haunt.

I've been intrigued by this show but have not watched it yet. I've even heard some great things from other parts of the internet that aren't Scooby Doo related lol

At the very least, it has to be better than a show with a similar premise, Yo Yogi! LOL

It's definitely a great show, and I think it ties together all the different HB characters excellently in a very entertaining way. The humor is very similar to Be Cool which is part of the reason why I like it so much.

I am a sucker for the classic Hanna Barbera characters. I'm a big Laff-a-lympics fan and believe it or not, I also quite enjoy Yogi's Gang simply because they gather all of the characters together.

I don't think I've seen much of Yogi's Gang beyond a few episodes. I liked it for what it was, although a few elements were a bit cringey if I remember right. They actually reference Yogi's Gang several times in Jellystone!, and bring several of the villains back.

Matt
3/22/2022 09:52:19 pm

Oh it ABSOLUTELY is cheesy beyond imagination. Although my reaction wasn’t cringing as much as kind of just getting used to it

WildwindVampire link
3/22/2022 10:24:13 pm

The villains were a cute idea to teach younger kids not to do certain things (i.e. littering, being a bigot, lying) but it's a bit odd to watch as an adult haha. I do remember sort of liking certain elements of it once I had seen a few episodes. It seems like a cute, inoffensive little show that's relatively enjoyable from what I've seen.

I can see where someone might feel like they are watching Sesame Street or something when watching it, but I guess it is because the source material isn't really aimed for toddlers so it doesn't feel as weird to me

I think part of the appeal to me is how optimistic of a worldview it has. It is simplified and unrealistic with the issues, but it is optimistic which you don't see everyday

Yogi's Treasure Hunt was one of the more enjoyable shows with the old roster of HB characters to me. Was never a big fan of these classic HB characters and shows personally, but the Dastardly & Muttley and Yogi-Boo Boo-Ranger side of things were always clearly the best to me.

WildwindVampire link
3/23/2022 08:24:54 am

That's a really neat perspective on how Yogi's Gang is optimistic. It is kinda sweet how upbeat the show is :)

I've never seen Yogi's Treasure Hunt, Becker. Did it have a similar premise to Yogi's Gang?

Yogi's Treasure Hunt was vastly different from Yogi's Gang
the synopsis for Yogi's Gang goes like this

Yogi, Boo Boo, Huckleberry Hound and their friends travel in a flying ark on a mission to combat the evils of society, such as bigotry, dishonesty and disrespect for the environment.

and Yogi's Treasure Hunt synopsis goes like this

in each episode, Yogi Bear and his friends took assignments from Top Cat to find lost treasure using their ship, SS Jelly Roger. Dick Dastardly and Muttley, aboard their ship, SS Dirty Tricks, wanted the same treasure for themsare elves, and would try numerous ruthless tricks to beat the others to it. Other Hanna-Barbera characters, such as Yakky Doodle, Mr. Jinks and Hokey Wolf, made cameos in certain episodes. Here is a review of Yogi's Treasure hunt in case you are interested in seeing in it which wast posted on Youtube, I could never see the appeal of Yogi's gang and have always preferred treasure hunt instead my only regret is that Dick Dastardly sounds rather old in it.I wish it would get a DVD release.

Yes, Jellystone is a much better cartoon then ,Yo Yogi! was I honestly recommend avoiding that show at all costs.

The show ended up being one of the most notorious Saturday Morning Cartoons failures for NBC due to low ratings and is often cited as one of the reasons why NBC decided to give up on broadcasting Saturday Morning Cartoons. It also even managed to kill off the Yogi Bear franchise (at least on TV) until the announcement of C.H. Greenblatt's Jellystone! in 2019, which debuted on HBO Max on July 29, 2021. The only other Yogi Bear-related media made since then are the specials and the 2010 film based on the franchise of the same name.

Why It Sucks.

1.The show's attempts at being trendy and radical is another example of a cheap and unneeded attempt at modernizing an old franchise. This also quickly becomes outdated and unfunny decades later after the show first premiered.
2.Poor grasp of the source material.
3.Despite the plots trying to do something different with each episode, they end up being the same (i.e something goes wrong at Jellystone Mall and it's up to Yogi and his friends to save the day)
4.in every episode, Yogi at some point spins his hat telling the viewer to wear 3D glasses for a certain scene (the 3D glasses came out of now out-of-print cereals that sponsored the show). They seem pointless to include because they make the show look like a mere product placement cartoon.
5.The show's plots are too similar to Hanna-Barbera's other franchise Scooby-Doo, most notably A Pup Named Scooby-Doo! since it featured younger versions of classic cartoon characters, but without that show's cleverness or charm or The Flintstones' (which is another Hanna-Barbera franchise) prequel, The Flintstone Kids.
6.Many of the characters are badly butchered;

Yogi is now portrayed as a lazy, more egotistical, and more destructive moron who has his mind on food and doesn’t stop talking about it unlike he did in the original cartoons. He would threaten anyone for being a classicist that is not "hip & radical".

Boo Boo is now more useless and only serves as someone for Yogi to talk to.

Cindy now acts like a stereotypical teenage girl and acts sassier.

Officer Smith acts more like a huge jerk and keeps blaming Yogi and friends for stuff that they didn’t even do.

Secret Squirrel acts much more like a nuisance and is a huge blabbermouth and keeps causing more harm than good.

7.Yogi was so badly redesigned in this show, that William Hanna, the co-creator of the Yogi Bear franchise and co-founder of Hanna-Barbera, was offended by Yogi's redesign, saying: They screwed it up by redesigning [Yogi]. They made him look like a whoremonger. If you have something that works, don't screw it up!
8.The show nearly killed the Yogi Bear franchise from getting a new show for several years until C.H. Greenblatt's upcoming Yogi Bear series Jellystone! was announced in 2019.
9.As said before, this show contributed to the death of Saturday Morning Cartoons.
10.The show has cameos by way too many obscure Hanna-Barbera characters that younger audiences aren’t familiar with such as Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har-Har, Loopy De Loop, Snooper, and Blabber, Granny Sweet, and others.
11.While some of the characters are children, other HB characters are in the normal age, which leads to much confusion and continuity errors such as Hardy Har-Har being a child and Lippy the Lion being an adult.
12.Some of the other characters, such as Klunk and Zilly (from Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines), never show up in the series as teenagers.
13.The show recycles the same duo of bumbling burglars plot for about four episodes.

Redeeming Qualities
1. A huge step-up over most of Hanna-Barbera's previous cartoon shows, the animation is very smooth and cartoony (aside from glaring ink and paint errors).
2.The voice acting is okay
3.Decent theme song.
4.The design for Jellystone Mall is impressive
5.Snagglepuss and Huckleberry Hound still act like their old selves and are the only likable characters on this show.
6.The final episode, "The Big Snoop" was a decent finale.

I am glad and relieved that Jellystone is nothing like Yo Yogi was.

Wow, very detailed analysis here. I am not overly familiar with Yo Yogi other than that it is supposed to be pretty bad. Although I do hold the seemingly unpopular opinion that I like Yogi's Gang. Always love the characters and the preachiness is more charming than annoying to me for some reason

Thank you for this detailed analysis, Whackman! I've never seen Yo Yogi! personally but I have not heard good things about it. It's interesting to hear they changed Ranger Smith into a police officer. Yogi trying to be "hip" and "radical" and accusing people of being classicists sounds super cringey. The 3-D glasses thing sounds very odd, I wonder why they would include something like that, since it immediately dates the show.

I just watched an episode - namely "Tricky Dickie's Dirty Trickies" (weird name lol) - and yeah, it was pretty bad. The plot dragged on and I was bored by the end, and it was mainly just random antics loosely connected by a plot. The episode ending with Dick Dastardly exclaiming "Drat! Double Drat! Triple Drat! Quadruple Drat!" seems like even the writers had run out of steam by the end lol. I guess my overall assessment of the show is that it seems like a half-developed concept with a lot of unnecessary and boring filler.

Normally I get excited about new Looney Tunes projects, but here in my opinion the animation looks a little off. More off than the animation in Wabbit/New Looney Tunes. Still, I'll check this movie out to see if it's any good.
