Fun Fact of the Week #392

Recently, to comply with Apple's terms of service, the social network Tumblr banned a bunch of tags. One such tag included #Alice May, probably meaning the Scooby-Doo character. It is unknown why this tag was banned, but it was likely a mistake. Other silly ones that were banned include #crying, #bald, #single, #tony the tiger, #sad, #me and #i love you. There will be no saying I love you on Tumblr lol. #Alice May seems to still be banned on Tumblr to this day.

This fun fact was inspired by this YouTube video from one of my favorite YouTubers, ColeyDoesThings, highlighting the Tumblr tags that were banned (I linked it to the spot in the video where she directly mentions Alice May, and I'd recommend checking out the whole video if you have the time as some of the banned tags are quite funny - although there are some PG-13 concepts that may not be appropriate for all audiences)

Apple owns Tumblr? News to me.

They don't, they changed it because the app would have had to be removed from the Apple App Store otherwise, due to some content on the app not complying with Apple's terms of service. Here's an article that explains a bit more about it: https://techcrunch.com/2021/12/29/tumblr-ios-tags-ban-apple/

Thanks. It's a shame "Alice May" was a villain to begin with, and now Tumblr just makes it sound derogatory. But then they've also done the same thing with Eugene Levy.

But then who uses Tumblr on the Apple store? I sure don't.

I don't use Tumblr at all so I can't speak to that, but yeah it's weird how they made all these normal terms and characters derogatory. I know Tony the Tiger was banned because too many people were writing inappropriate stories (don't know how people would want/have the time to do that, but who knows), but I'm not sure on the rest of the terms. And tbh I don't even know who Eugene Levy is.

If you needed some incentive to check out Jellystone Season 2, then you will be happy to know that there are some Scooby references.

(I say this to anyone who reads this comment, as I know WildWindVampire already knows. ;))
