Fun Fact of the Week #362

Picture
The married couple that the gang stayed with in "Snow Place Like Home" (A Pup Named Scooby-Doo), Mr. and Mrs. Morganson, are voiced by a real-life married couple, Maggie Roswell and Hal Rayle. Interestingly, the couple had just gotten married only a year before the episode premiered, and are still married today. Maggie Roswell is perhaps best known for her role as Maude Flanders on The Simpsons.

Thanks so much to Ben for coming up with today's fun fact!

They're also based on an aborted HB concept Mr and Mrs. Evil Scientist. They were supporting character in a couple of 60s HB shows and briefly had their own comic book spinoff

That’s really interesting! I had no idea who either of those characters were, so interesting to know Mr. and Mrs. Morganson are based off of them!

Mr. Morganson sounds similar to Pacco from How to Train Your Coward

That is such an interesting connection. Nice catch.

It’s been forever since I’ve watched that episode so I didn’t remember that, but that’s a really cool connection! :)

This is just a rumor for now, but these are the supposed descriptions and characters who will be in the series.

Thanks for the link, Whackman! The descriptions seem a bit odd, particularly if the part about Fred being 16 and not going through puberty yet is true.

Thanks for the link! And yikes I’m not really a fan of what I just read. I’m trying to be positive but this sounds a mess…

I wasn't a huge fan either. I'm going to still give it as much of a chance as I was before, but some of the descriptions seem really weird and off to me.

I fear that There is going to be an online uproar about Velma when it debuts and if the rumors turn out to be true.

People went nuts when Lillard wasn't vocing Shaggy in Scoob. Now he's not only going to have a different voice actor, but a change in race as well if the rumor is true that is.

I wish people would calm down about the change in race thing. I'm pretty sure Velma being of Indian descent has been officially confirmed at this point, but we don't know anything else, so I don't understand why people are leaping to judge it so quickly. It very well might be awful, but we'll never know until it comes out so there's no real reason to get all worked up already over something that might not even be true.

To me the race thing doesn’t bother me as much as the fact that they might as well make a new original series if they are going to make such drastic changes. I’m a person of color myself but I would rather them bring new POC original characters rather than change races of already established characters. Someone said this show seems like it was intended as an original show and they just slapped Scooby characters on it so it could sell. Sadly this is what it seems like.

I’m with holding my judgment but so far I’m not liking where this is heading.

I can totally see where you're coming from, and I'm really hoping the change in Velma's race isn't going to be in a tokenistic way so they can earn "woke points." Hopefully they actually work it into the storyline in a meaningful way.

I am sad to say that I did not like what I read AT ALL. Especially Fred’s description

Nor did I. If this is true, I have no idea how they're going to make Fred not hitting puberty at 16 into a storyline, nor do I want to know quite frankly lol.

I just read the article and... wow. It's really bad. Actually horrible. None of the descriptions sound anything like these characters at all. It's like they just created some random og characters for the show and just slapped Scooby-Doo names on them. It's baffling to read. I really hope it's fake, cuz that's just not good. If it is real, then this show will probably be the "Riverdale" of the Scooby franchise. And that's not a title you want.

Right? It feels like they kind of just lazily slapped some new personalities on the gang instead of actually trying to build upon their characterization. I really hope this is fake because, as much as I wanted to like this, I really don't like the character descriptions. I'm still going to give it a chance no matter what, but I didn't love what I read.

what it sounds like is that they just gave the gang all the theories that fans have had since the show began. like shaggy being a stoner, velma being gay, and just the worst version of daphne and freds relationship

WildwindVampire link
8/18/2021 11:27:30 am

Hadn't thought of it like that before but you're right it seems like, by those descriptions at least, that they're catering to the stereotypes of the gang. I hope those aren't the real descriptions.

If it's real (I really hope it's not), then all of these characters and plot points in the show would just be for audience pandering, woke culture and agenda points, having no genuine fondness and respect for the original characters and who they were. The article itself kinda seems like that too.
Like, at least the way they were describing Velma herself when the show was announced sounds like she is still probably the same sort of character – the only differences we know of so far are her race and sexuality, but her actual personality kinda sounds like the Velma we all know.
Also, another example of how terrible the article is in every way is that they refer to Velma as East Asian and as Indian/South Asian at different points inside of it. How can you mess up so badly.

Oh, and still bummed about Scooby not being included btw. If anything, hopefully Shaggy will encounter and take him home at the end of the season or something. I'd be satisfied with that at this stage.

@The Cop, yup, that sounds about right. Specifically all the bad stereotypes and surface-level theories cranked up to 11, and going even beyond that with adding their own headcanons and out-of-nowhere traits.

I totally agree with all of that. I'm okay with Scooby not being there (I know that's a very unpopular opinion), but only if it's somewhat decent. Like I've said before I thought the Daphne & Velma novels worked really well with Scooby just making brief appearances (and not being able to talk), so I was hoping that was the direction they'd take it. With those descriptions though, I don't know anymore.

Does anyone else think that Daphne’s description makes it sound like they are setting her up with Velma?

Yeah, and it also sounds like they're setting up Fred with Velma too. All the while Fred and Daphne are the actual couple inside of it. Holy sht, what kind of love triangle is this

Yeah, it definitely sounded a little like that. I'm quite wary of love triangles after the Velma/Shaggy/Scooby thing in SDMI, so if these descriptions are indeed real, I hope it's nothing like that.

This sounds like a disaster. Shame because I was one of the people who thought this kind of concept of a teen show could work if done well

This is like the worst way to do a "mature" Scooby show. Almost every decision is just... why.
Just take 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo and reboot the show in a more serious, scarier, darker way. With all the main characters and relations from the original 13 Ghosts, plus Fred and Velma in the finale. I'd love to see something like that.

I still haven't fully accepted that these are the real descriptions, though I could just be in denial haha. If they are the real descriptions, I guess all we can hope is that the execution isn't as cringey as some of the descriptions were written.

Yea I really hope it's not but I fear it is, it's like the worst version of the Venture Bros versions mixed with that scene from Jay and Bob Strike back. Oh well hopefully it won't last if it is true...

WildwindVampire link
8/20/2021 01:56:42 pm

I fear it's true as well. If it gets terrible ratings I can't imagine it'd last...I'm still holding out hope it's fake, or that the writing is at least somewhat decent if it is true (which I can't imagine it is if they're just using all stereotypes, but I guess the only way to know is to wait and see).

John Locke
8/20/2021 02:30:44 pm

If it is true, I feel the ratings would depend on how many "Casual" scooby viewers don't really watch it and are excited to see all the things they joke about actually playing on screen, though, hate to say it, pretty sure that group also would hate it just for the change in races of some characters. This feels like them trying to jump into the Venture Bros/Rick and Morty section of fandoms, which I mean... have their places, but it's not really something I want for scooby.

Becker

I don't think there's any realistic way to make these kinds of plots and portayals well written, because they're ill conceived from the basis. Someone competent wouldn't come up with any of this stuff to begin with.

WildwindVampire link
8/21/2021 12:57:28 pm

I would agree with that. If it's anything like what the descriptions are saying, I don't think a lot of casual Scooby fans will care to watch it.
