Fun Fact of the Week #310

Over the course of more than fifty years, the Scooby-Doo franchise has produced nearly 500 separate mysteries, spread across over a dozen animated series, as well as over 30 animated films and specials. However, despite the plethora of content, there have only been 150 mysteries with women represented in a villainous role, 68 of which still include at least one man sharing that role.

Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! currently holds the record for containing the most women in a villainous role, with a total of 27, as well as the most episodes with ONLY a woman in the villain’s role, with a total of 11.

As there are some mysteries in which multiple women appear, the series break down as follows:

2 women in 2 episodes of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!
2 in 2 episodes of The New Scooby-Doo Movies
7 in 7 episodes of The Scooby-Doo Show
2 in 2 episodes of Scooby-Doo & Scrappy Doo (first series)
4 in 4 episodes of The Richie Rich/Scooby-Doo Show
8 in 6 episodes of The Scooby & Scrappy-Doo Puppy Hour
1 in 1 episode of Scrappy & Yabba-Doo
4 in 3 episodes The New Scooby & Scrappy-Doo Show
12 in 11 episodes The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries
11 in 6 episodes of The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo
6 in 6 episodes of A Pup Named Scooby-Doo
25 in 21 episodes of What’s New, Scooby-Doo?
3 in 2 episodes of Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue!
23 in 22 episodes of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated*
27 in 22 episodes of Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!
8 (so far) in 8 episodes of Scooby-Doo & Guess Who?

Plus:
48 in 24 animated films
1 in 1 animated special

Additionally, upon a closer examination of these 194 women, a surprising 41 are disguised as a specifically male character (21%), while only 37 wear the disguise of a specifically female character (19%). The remaining women are either in a non-gendered disguise (12%), an animal disguise/working with animals (9%) or are a real monster/not in a mask (38%).

*this counts both Alice May and Marcie Fleach twice for their dual appearances as Ghost Girl/Obliteratrix and the Manticore/Dark Lilith respectively.

I hate to be “that guy”, but there were actually 2 female culprits in the first “Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo” show, Lefty Callahan as the Lady Vampire and Tessie as the alien.

How did you arrive at four in The Richie Rich Hour? I don't think that show had any mysteries

We were counting female villains in general (hence the "real" piece of the pie chart), not just unmasked ones. There were 4 female villains in the Richie Rich Hour: the Swamp Witch, the Evil Queen of Wonderland, the Wicked Witch of the North by Southeast and Madame Olga.

I would add that Get a Clue's counter should be 1 instead of 0 due to More Fondue For Scooby-Doo

It'll actually need to be 3, I think. Misty, Carla AND Cat Lady will all need to be added. I'd left Get A Clue out, as I'd always seen Phibes as the series villain, but I did include side/not-main female villains in some of the other series counts, so it's only fair they get put in too. Thanks for pointing that out!

@WildWindVampire. A new poll question just came to me as I was watching voice showcases. This one is specific, the question is "what is your favorite role that Jim Cummings performed?" This question can go to a theme of various voice actors that had more than one appearance to play a role that may or may not include the main cast. What do you think?

That could be a cool idea to ask what people's favorite voice actors roles are for certain actors. I like it, though I may not get to it for a little bit since I kinda have a bit of a theme (yet to be revealed) for the daily polls leading up to something on the last day of polls. I'm still actually trying to figure out how to work your previous movie question into that, so that might get bumped back to October as well. Thank you for all your poll suggestions though and I'll definitely get to them at some point :)

I understand and that's okay, I have a link that shows a list of the voice actors that you can click and read about them and there roles in The Scooby Doo Franchise.

Here's the link. I'm excited and can't wait to see what you have to reveal, but for now, enjoy what your doing at your own pace and I'll be looking forward to the big event. :)

Isn't Scooby Doo Where Are You 2? Captain Cutler's wife and I believe Mrs Jenkins from the Funland episode. This is a really great list though and really shows how cartoons have changed since the turn of the century!

You are correct. I'd originally done the list for only "masked" villains, but then I got to a point where I realized that wasn't really fair because it left so many out, and going back to include the non-masked villains I somehow managed to overlook a few. So I went through the entire franchise again last night/this morning to correct these mistakes and this post will be updated soon to reflect that. There were actually quite a few missing!

I just updated the post now! Thank you everyone for pointing out the few that we accidentally missed, and an even bigger thanks to Bradford for spending so much of last night and this morning going over every detail again to make sure everything was correct!

No worries, it really is interesting to see how female villains have become more regular in recent years.

Season two of Guess Who will begin airing in Canada on October 18th. Whether or not someone will record them is unknown; however, we will know more guest stars and episodes.

It was reported he died from natural causes, so presumably it is not from the virus.

unfortunately, I am fairly certain that they are no people from sharemania, which can actually record episodes from canada, but....(hear me out with this please.) but they are several uploaders from nanda which I do know of which can record shows from canada. Dani and DJStarfish can record from canada. (to be more specific that site is called, nanda.to)

It seems like Dfrazzer has stopped uploading stuff, unfortunately, which is too bad. I hope someone is able to record these this time so we can watch them!
