Update 3/24: Paul Walter Hauser has officially been cast, according to Deadline. He will be a regular character in the series. This confirms What's on Netflix's previous scoop that he will play Scooby's old owner; however, Deadline's article does not mention that this will be his role. Thanks Becker for the info!

Netflix has given us an extremely exciting update on the upcoming live-action show! Deadline has confirmed that the entire gang has been officially cast. Abby Ryder Fortson will play Velma, Maxwell Jenkins will play Fred, and Shaggy will be played by Tanner Hagen. Along with the casting announcement, a new description for the series has been shared:

During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.

While this bit hasn't been officially confirmed, an insider source has reported to What's on Netflix that Paul Walter Hauser has also been cast as Scooby's old owner. The series is rumored to begin filming next month in Atlanta, and will wrap on September 10, 2026. The working title for the series is reported as Scooby-Doo: Origins. However, working titles often change, so the title will likely be different when the series is actually released. All of the info from What's on Netflix comes from an undisclosed "insider," so take all the info in this paragraph with a grain of salt.

Variety also revealed that Toby Haynes has signed on as executive producer, and will direct the series premiere. ProductionList confirms that filming begins April 27! (Thanks to Becker for finding this info)

On her Instagram, Mckenna Grace posted a story showing us that the whole group has already begun working together. Check out the photo below:

I can't really speak much on Maxwell as an actor, but watching an interview for a show from last year it doesn't seem like a bad pick for Fred. Curious what role Scooby's original owner would have in the story, considering he's an abandoned pup when found by the gang. Also, 5 months of shooting is more than I expected.

Glad to hear he seems like a good fit. I'm wondering about that too. My thinking is maybe he'll appear after Scooby has an emotional bond with the gang, which could cause a potential rift between them (especially if he wants Scooby back). He may also play some role in the mystery. Yeah, five months seems like a long time for eight episodes!

I was thinking maybe Scooby's owner is the one murdered and we'll see him in flashbacks and stuff

I hadn't even thought of that! I bet you're right. That would fit into the mystery super well if Scooby was the witness.

no idea who Maxwell is but he does kinda look like Fred

Agreed, he looks decently like Fred. I'll be curious to see if he'll dye his hair for the role, or if it will be another Robbie Amell situation.

i'm also curious about that too and i also wonder if they'll dye McKenna's hair as well

For some reason I hadn't even thought about Mckenna lol. I'm curious to see if they will too.

This is awesome! I'm not familiar with any of them other than Abby. The only thing I've seen her in is Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, which I thought she did great in. Super excited for this news!

From her filmography, Ant-Man 1 & 2 are what I recognize Abby from (the biggest movies), but those were a decade ago when she wasn't even 10, which feels crazy.

WildwindVampire link
3/18/2026 05:49:21 pm

Wow, I didn't even realize she was in the first two Ant-Man movies! I've seen her in those too, but never made the connection it was the same actress!

Becker

The fact that Cassie Lang has had 3 different actresses is kinda funny to me.

Matt

I didn't realize that was her in Antman. Of course it has been years, and I have not watched those movies since they came out

It is kinda wild haha.

Also, upon doing further research, I realized I actually have seen Maxwell in something before. I saw him as the younger version of the main character in a zany mockumentary called Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (absolutely ridiculous movie, but I loved it lol). His role was pretty small, but I think he could make a good Fred based on what I remember of that role.

A previous owner for Scooby-Doo long before Shaggy huh? This I'd like to see for myself.

I'll be interested to see how they handle the storyline too! I wonder if it will be anything like how they approached it in Get a Clue (minus them being evil robots made by Phibes lol), where it causes a rift between Scooby's new friendship with the gang.

I doubt it, since I already suspect Scooby might not really like said former owner.

This is very surface level I know lol, but all of them have the right vibe and look the part. The picture also helps and I hope the dynamic of the gang will be strong!

I think this is a great approach to casting. One of them being a big name but is actually universally agreed on to be a perfect fit for the role, while the others are lesser-known faces who can slip right into the roles without the audience seeing the actors rather than the characters.

And of course, while not technically officially announced, Frank Welker is certain to voice Scooby, which only makes it even better. It was revealed by NexusPointNews who are reliable (and reported Velma and Shaggy's actors first too) and it's treated as a real thing by media:

Also, Mckenna has posted this on Instagram, which I find sweet:

I agree this was the best approach they could have taken. Especially given Mckenna was previously a part of the Scooby franchise, and had a starring role in a cancelled film. It's awesome that the "big name" they chose allowed her to get a second chance at a bigger role! I'm also glad they didn't choose a lot of big names. Having one bigger actor gives the series just enough of a boost to be interesting to non-Scooby fans, while also not just going with a bunch of celebrity picks. Having Frank is the cherry on top, as far as I'm concerned!

I already made a post about Frank voicing Scooby back in December, which is why I didn't mention the announcement again here. https://scoobysnax1.weebly.com/blog/frank-welker-voicing-scooby-doo-in-netflix-live-action-series It's interesting that What's on Netflix didn't report it along with the other info revealed by insider sources.

Lol yeah, I actually saw the photo right after I made the post haha.

I assume they just forgot to mention the part about Frank here: https://www.whats-on-netflix.com/news/abby-ryder-fortson-tanner-hagen-scooby-doo-series/

Because they did mention it a week ago in this other article: https://www.whats-on-netflix.com/news/paul-walter-hauser-eyed-for-role-in-netflixs-live-action-scooby-doo-series/

Aight maybe I caught the post and started writing a comment before the picture was added cuz otherwise I'm blind lmao.

I'm so happy we finally got a full cast for the gang! I'm not familiar with any of the new faces (other than knowing stuff they're in) but they all seem to at least have the vibes if that's the right word. Filming lasting until September is surprising if true! I wonder if it's because they want to film outside stuff actually during the summer (no clue if this is a valid reason as I couldn't tell you what weather Atlanta has right now) or if it'll have more cgi elements than I'd assumed. Either way, I'd expect it to be ready to come out next year, which is super exciting!!

Totally agree the vibes all seem really good with this cast! I'm excited to learn more about them. I was thinking that too on the filming. If this is mainly taking place at camp, they likely want to get as many outdoor scenes as they can. According to this site, looks like Atlanta is quite warm in the summer. It's usually in the 70s and 80s in the summer, so perfect weather to create some summery-feeling scenes haha. https://unexpectedatlanta.com/atlanta-weather-guide/ Yeah, I'm guessing the show will likely come out next year too!

It's interesting that the official Scooby-Doo account commented that the gang is "almost" all here. I guess technically Frank hasn't been officially announced as the voice of Scooby, but it seems that most media outlets are considering NexusPointNews a reliable source for confirming it.

Variety revealed that Toby Haynes will be the director and executive producer for the first episode. He directed episodes for Sherlok, Black Mirror and Doctor Who. He’s got a great resume, can’t wait

Thanks, I'd totally missed his involvement was a new announcement with all the other names being there! I'm a big Doctor Who fan, so I'm excited to see him involved. Looks like he directed some of the episodes with Matt Smith at the end of season 5 and beginning of season 6, which was a really good stretch for the series imo.

He also directed most of season 1 of Andor, which is often considered the only good Star Wars Disney+ show since Mandalorian season 2.

Cool, I didn't realize he was involved with that show too! I would definitely consider that to be one of the only good Star Wars shows. I liked Obi-Wan and Skeleton Crew, but the others were a bit too samesy for my tastes. I stopped watching the new Star Wars shows a couple years ago because it felt like they were just making the same show over and over lol.

I’m so glad that they didn’t race-swap any of the characters, despite it having one of the same producers as Riverdale! I guess WB learned its lesson with Velma lol. Though just so we’re clear, I’m fine with race-swapping if the character needs improvement, such as Ned Leeds in Spider-Man or if the character has been a different race before, such as Nick Fury or Catwoman but when a character that didn’t necessarily need improvement like Ariel in The Little Mermaid or Veronica and Josie in Riverdale (really half the cast of Riverdale lol) or even Blossom and Buttercup in that Powerpuff pilot that thankfully never got picked up, it just comes off as forced diversity.

Riverdale’s main cast was never race swapped tho.. only Veronica being latina. so what you on about?

Just to clear it up, it wasn’t just the main characters on Riverdale that were race-swapped. Josie, Melody, Reggie, Dilton, Mr. Weatherbee, and Pop Tate were all race-swapped.

WildwindVampire link
3/20/2026 09:02:27 am

I understand your opinion, but the race-swapping wasn't the issue with Velma imo. The series would have been totally fine if the characters were written in a more likable way, and they hadn't doubled-down on the troll humor so much.

Right of course those were the biggest issues I had with Velma, not just the race-swapping. I’m just hoping that they learned a LOT of lessons with that show lol

I hope so too! Like I mentioned in the article from a couple weeks ago, I feel like the show literally did almost nothing right, so I hope they do not take inspiration from anything Velma did lol.

I'm still hoping they either cancel this show or do a complete rewrite as the synopsis is a terrible idea for a scooby Doo show. don't get me wrong, darker Scooby Doo show could work but not like this. both zombie Island, camp scare, and mystery Inc still included the standard scooby Doo comedy and set up and worked. what has come out so far is almost as big of spit in the face as Velma or canceling the hex girl movies (the hex girls movie and the high riser Scooby Doo movie).
