On September 18, we got our first taste of what the annual Scoobtober celebration will look like. This year, it looks like the celebration will be much more expansive than previous years. Besides the Velma Halloween special, the Boomerang TV network will be airing 24 hours of Scooby-Doo content every weekend, and over 11 hours of Scooby content each weekday. There will also be Scooby-Doo livestreams through the WB Kids YouTube channel all month long, most notably a 48-hour movie marathon on October 26 at 10:00am through October 28 at 10:00am EST (which will also be available to stream on the MultiVersus Twitch channel). In addition, there will be special Scooby-Doo rewards on MultiVersus, and the Scooby-Doo official TikTok account will be going live for 12 hours on October 19, from 8:00am - 8:00pm. In addition, there will be tons of new Scooby-Doo merch available at stores throughout the month, and new Scooby-Doo collections available at the WB Shop. In addition, the MeTV schedule reveals that the previously announced Scooby-Doo Sunday Specials happening from October 13-27 may be comprised of films. We don't know the schedule for October 27, but Ghoul School will be aired on October 13 and Reluctant Werewolf will air on October 20. It would be really cool if the movie Svengoolie was providing commentary for on October 27 was Zombie Island or Witch's Ghost! Since I missed the announcement, I'm also including an image of the Scooby-Doo Puma shoes that will be released in November, which can be found on the SoleRetriever website. Check out WB's press release below for the full details on the expansive Scoobtober festivities this year!

Throughout the Scrappy years, all four members of the gang turn into werewolves. Shaggy becomes a werewolf due a family legend in both "Moonlight Madness" and Reluctant Werewolf; Scooby turns into a werewolf in "Where's the Werewolf?"; Scrappy is changed into a werewolf in "Canine to Five"; and Daphne is transformed into a werewolf in "To All the Ghouls I Loved Before."
Thanks to Juan for coming up with this week's fun fact! Today is the final day of Scooby's anniversary month, and we have one more fan spotlight to wrap things up. Our fan spotlight today is Alexandra Rutt, who used to run a Scooby Facebook group, and also has been a reader of this blog for a while.
1. What is your name? Alexandra Rutt 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? Well, I’ve had two phases of being into Scooby-Doo. The first was when I was a kid. I remember when I graduated from Playhouse Disney to Cartoon Network, Scooby-Doo seemed intimidating to me because it was about monsters. The first episode I ever saw was Strange Encounters of a Scooby Kind. I remember my genuine surprise when the alien turned out to be a regular crook in disguise. I assumed this was a break from the typical supernatural encounter this gang of characters faces (especially given that the Scrappy-Doo intro featured real spooks). This rerun was followed by The Scary Sky Skeleton and by the end of this mystery, I realized that supernatural hoaxes were a typical outcome for this show. Still, I watched Scooby in various forms up until I hit middle school. The last episode I saw was Battle of the Humungonauts and I moved onto other interests. Aside from catching Samurai Sword on TV at the YMCA, I went seven years without watching Scooby again. One night in 2017, I was at a family gathering and got into a confrontation. I was rightfully sent upstairs and, out of boredom, started flipping through the channels. It was there I came across Be Cool Scooby-Doo (specifically, Where’s There’s a Will, There’s a Wraith). It was like being reunited with childhood friends who had moved away. It made me realize that Scooby-Doo was such a big part of my childhood and there’s still so much of it that I haven’t seen yet. 7 years later and I have seen every Scooby episode, movie, and tv special there is. 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? You know, it might be weird to pick something so recent but my favorite movie is Trick or Treat, Scooby-Doo. I don’t know where to begin with this movie. Trick or Treat was such a breath of fresh air after a long run of hit or miss DTV films. There’s so much love and craft put into every frame of animation. Coco Diablo was a memorable character and her interactions with the gang were funny as hell. I wouldn’t mind seeing her become a semi-permanent member. This movie feels heavily influenced by Ren & Stimpy and Adventure Time, and that deranged style of comedy is a good fit for the gang. It leaves you constantly guessing what will happen next, even if the mystery is pretty obvious. If I have one complaint, Daphne’s arc and resolution was half-assed and felt like it was from a different movie. I wish there could’ve been more movies by this creative team but in a way, that makes this movie all the more special. I couldn’t pick just one favorite episode. My favorite episodes are The Backstage Rage, Mystery Solvers Club State Finals, and Doo Not Disturb. I picked these three because they all represent what I would like to see more of in Scooby. Doo Not Disturb has a well executed mystery with genuinely clever clues. Not much else to say other than that is surprisingly rare in this franchise lol. Mystery Solvers Club State Finals is a hilarious exploration of an overlooked aspect of the franchise: the various Scooby clones that HB produced. All of the weird HB characters are perfectly captured and much funnier than how they were originally depicted. A lot of the modern HB fanservice projects like Jellystone and Scoob have left me cold but this episode does the concept well. The Backstage Rage is one I wasn’t sure about including because it doesn’t have the same impact now that it did when I was a kid but this is a kid’s franchise so it deserves to be mentioned. This episode scared the shit out of me as a kid. The first half of this episode has such an unnerving quality. The shot of The Puppet Master standing by the door, and the music cue that plays underneath, still creeps me out which is impressive. Once it comes back from commercial break though, it becomes more of a typical Scooby episode. 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? I’m not really involved in any sort of “fandom” anymore. I used to tweet with other Scooby fans, posted on ScoobyAddicts, and ran a HB fan group on Facebook but none of that interests me atm. I think the Scooby fandom has shrunk considerably from the Be Cool days (I’ll elaborate on that in a bit) and there’s not a lot of interesting discussion. I still have a very close relationship with James Dixon, who used to run Scoobypedia and now runs a separate Hanna-Barbera Wiki (I’ll tell him to link it in the comments). 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? My favorite show is Where Are You and my favorite era is the Be Cool era. Even though it’s universally beloved and iconic among Scooby fans, I feel like WAY is somehow still underappreciated. It has such a different tone than any other cartoon before or since. The stiltedness of the dialogue and animation actually work in its favor. It gives certain episodes a feeling of unease and as a kid, that can feel very dreamlike and creepy. I wish the franchise kept going in that tonal direction instead of focusing more on comedy and strictly following the formula. But still, the best era for the show for me is 2015-2018. This is the era that made me a fan and there was such a sense of excitement among the fandom. Everyone was still riding the high of Mystery Incorporated and standout DTVs like Frankencreepy. To say nothing of the fact that we had a new Scooby series that was completely unlike anything before (with writers eager to promote themselves and discuss their creative process). And there was a growing anticipation for projects such as S.C.O.O.B. and Curse of the 13th Ghost. Speaking of growing, the fandom also felt like it was reaching new heights. There were multiple Scooby podcasts and newfound interest in the franchise’s behind the scenes history. Unfortunately, the overall mehness of Guess Who, the mixed reactions to Curse of the 13th Ghost and Scoob, and the outright panning of Return to Zombie Island really destroyed all that momentum. Most of those podcasts don’t even exist anymore and the DTVs seem to have permanently been put to rest. It’s a real shame. I hope I get to feel that sense of excitement again about future Scooby projects. 6. What one Scooby-Doo series or film would you want a sequel to someday? I would love to see some kind of follow up to Get a Clue. Mainly just to see Dr. Phibes or Robi return. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? I would like to see more respect given to the franchise’s varied and unique history, such as Scrappy and Get a Clue. However, I wouldn’t want to see it become self-indulgent and fanservice focused like other pop culture franchises. Something else I would like to see is creators who are more knowledgeable and passionate about the era of horror that influenced Where Are You. I’ve been doing some research into the horror genre in the 30s and 40s, and it's given me a greater appreciation for Where Are You and how it tries to emulate that tone. Long-forgotten tropes from that era are embedded in the DNA of the franchise. For example, did you know that actors in gorilla suit menacing damsels was a common cliche in movies back then? There were even actors like Charles Gemora and Steve Calvert who specialized in playing those roles. The creators of WAY would’ve grown up with those movies and used them as inspiration for Never Ape an Ape Man. Suddenly the premise of that episode makes a lot more sense. Forgive me for the tangent but I find stuff like this fascinating. 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? The character I continually find myself fascinated by is Fred. He’s a bit of a rorschach test. I remember watching the Gunn movies with my mom and remarking at how much of a douche they made him and responded “well that’s cuz he was always so pompous in the original”. What’s interesting about that statement is Fred didn’t really have much of a personality in his original incarnation (though he did occasionally get some “Women, am I right?” quips in The New Scooby Movies). To her, and likely Gunn as well, Fred was a symbol of male chauvinism unjustifiably claiming Velma’s rightful title of team leader. But to younger fans, Fred is a cuddly golden retriever himbo. A perfect boyfriend archetype. It certainly helps that he has become so tied to his iconic voice actor, Frank Welker. It’s easy to view them as being one and the same. And then there’s his ever changing level of intelligence. Be Cool!Fred is an authoritarian but still hyper competent and the second smartest member of the gang. MI!Fred shares this competency but is absolutely clueless on social interactions and fetishistically obsessed with the concept of traps (hmm). WNSD!Fred is dumb but still skilled at planning traps. Pup!Fred is a conspiracy theorist imbecile and Velma is the one who comes up with the traps. To say nothing of the occasional snide jokes, among viewers, about his fruity fashion sense and what that may imply about his sexuality (though obviously he’s subject to this less than Velma). There’s a lot of angles in which to explore the Fred Man and I have a blast seeing Frank Welker tackle them. 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? This is going to be a weird answer but The Dandy Highwayman from Mystery Incorporated has always stuck out in my mind. He’s a unique take on the Scooby-Doo formula. A Scooby “monster” that is not monstrous at all aside from his seemingly supernatural powers. Instead, he’s a takeoff of romance novel cliches. A lot of modern Scooby monsters tend to just stomp around and loudly break stuff so it was cool to see an antagonist who is affable, charismatic, and more psychologically manipulative. And he still has a secret identity to be unmasked and a criminal scheme so he’s not a complete departure from the formula. 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? I LOVE Dr. Phibes. I understand people’s criticisms of Get a Clue as a series but Dr. Phibes is such a well-developed and funny character. DeLaurentis specifically tailored him to Jeff Bennett, a very underrated voice actor, and Bennett imbues the character with so much personality and even pathos. Professor Pericles was a similar character but, IN MY OPINION, he was flatter and not as compelling despite being taken more seriously and voiced by a more regarded actor. The animation on Phibes is also hilarious and lovingly done. He’s basically the real protagonist of the show. It should be called Dr. Phibes Gets a Clue. 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? My Scooby “collection” is fairly scattershot. Just a few home videos, comics, and miscellaneous merch. What I do have that I am very proud of is several issues of Look-In Magazine from the 90s. This magazine featured exclusive two page stories featuring the 80s lineup of Daphne, Scooby, Scrappy, and Shaggy. The stories are mostly gag based but the art is gorgeous. It’s a shame more fans haven’t seen these stories but good for me since it’s easier to buy them lol. 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? It’s hard to pinpoint because Scooby’s longevity really is miraculous. What I think helped its initial success is that it was the first cartoon where the women were treated as equal to men and were an active part of the show (or at least Velma was lol). I also think Scooby benefitted from the massive boom in horror fandom that started in the 80s. Takamoto’s character designs are so iconic and Scooby is a top 5 lovable cartoon dog. 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? I actually used to work at the Cartoon Network Hotel! There wasn’t any Scooby stuff there though. 14. Please feel free to share anything else you’d like to here! I made this funny YouTube video a LONG time ago that I still think holds up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa0__syPaX8 Thanks to Alexandra for being our final fan spotlight this year! I've really enjoyed doing all the special posts on here this past month, between starting up the fan spotlights again, the daily polls, and the couple of retrospective posts I've done. I hope you all have enjoyed the special posts for the anniversary month, and here's to hopefully many more years of Scooby-Doo! I kept the question broad to mean both real-life and fictional celebrities, such as The Addams Family and Norma Deathman, who are said to be celebrities in the Scooby-Doo universe from their respective episodes.
Here are the results from last week's poll: What is your favorite episode taking place in San Francisco? The San Franpsycho - 35 Mystery Mask Mix-Up - 13 I Left My Neck in San Francisco - 5 Surprised Spies - 2 Protein Titans 2 - 2 The Chinese Food Factory - 1 Africa and San Francisco - 0 Today, our fan spotlight is Scubidu! Scubidu runs his own Scooby-Doo Instagram account, Diário do Scooby, and used to contribute to a Brazilian Scooby-Doo fan page. Here is Scubidu's fan spotlight:
1. What is your name? Hi, my name is Bryan but online I tipically go by “Scubidu”, which is how you’d spell Scooby-Doo here in Brazil where I live. It’s also one of the names the franchise got here when some comics were released in the early late 70s. 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? I watch Scooby-Doo for as long as I can remember. They’d usually air the cartoon in the morning, right when I was at preschool, so my dad (who’s also a fan of the show) recorded it on VHS for me. Since always, it’s been my favorite cartoon and it ended influenced many of my favorite things, like slasher movies, whodunit-type of stories and mystery novels. 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? Favorite episode has to be “Which Witch is Witch?”. It’s a classic and there’s two of my favorite things in a Scooby episode – a witch and a swamp. The scene where Shaggy and Scooby disguise themselves as the swamp witch and Shaggy recites a made-up spell is pure gold. Also, I deeply connect with the one scene where the witch goes “Money, money, money!”. I wish I had a more original answer, but my favorite film is “Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island”. I think it has the perfect balance of darkness and humor, the characters’ personalities are just on point and the artwork is a stunning. Everytime I rewatch it, I notice more and more details that amaze me. It’s truly a masterpiece in my opinion. 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? From 2013 through 2017, I used to contribute to a brazilian fanpage. I really enjoyed it but, unfortunately, I had to quit to focus on college. I recently started a new fanpage called “Diário do Scooby” (@diariodoscoobydoo on Instagram) 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? Nostalgia aside, Mystery Incorporated and Be Cool, Scooby-Doo are my favorite series of the franchise. Mystery Incorporated because of the over-arching plot full of horror and pop culture references and Be Cool because of the characters development. Be Cool really felt like a love letter to the characters, even when they were poking fun on the tropes and the characters, they were never offensive. I wish people would give this series it's well deserved praise. Fortunately, I've seen a lot of people revisiting it and realizing how great it is. 6. What one Scooby-Doo series or film would you want a sequel to someday? That's a sensitive topic, cause the last sequels we got weren't very good in my opinion. But if done right, I'd love to see a third season of Mystery Incorporated, more character-driven, cause I think there was so much going on on the second season (plot-wise) that we didn't have the time to see how the gang have grown and matured from the things they experience. I'd like to see more depth to Daphne's character and proper development of Velma and Marcie hinted relationship. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? I really want them to focus on the gang's interaction with each other, as the group of close friends we know they are, but lately I feel like this aspect has been overshadowed by cheap gags, celebrity guests, crossover and car chase scenes. Also, can we not WILLINGLY mess with the continuity? (Yes, I'm looking at you, Return to Zombie Island) 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? Velma was always my favorite character, cause I've related to her way of being methodic, not really loud and kind of on her own. But lately, we got a new thing in common, being part of the LGBTQIA community (at least in some incarnations, haha). 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? Lena and Simone. Cause they didn't start as evil villains, but were injusticed and then got corrupted. I like the subversion. 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? Velma's sister, Madelyn. I love her dynamic with Shaggy and Scooby. I wish we saw more of her. #JusticeForMadelynDinkley 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? I have a small collection with 10 DVDs, a Scooby Apocalypse compilation and some figures. Unfortunately, I can't tell you everything in detail cause everything is in a box right now, cause I'm about to move. 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? I think it's the fact that you will always relate to someone from the gang, cause they are all unique and diverse characters. Also, the franchise is always reinventing itself (it doesn't always turn out good though). 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? I'm an amateur music producer. If you search "I'm a Hex Girl (Spellbound Remix)", you'll find a dubstep-y remix for that song I made when I was 15. So cringe. 14. Please feel free to share anything else you’d like to here! Lately, I'm seeing a lot of people from the Scooby community being hostile to each other, to Scooby creators etc. I just wanna ask those people to be kind to each other. We're all united by a franchise that it's so gleeful, so full of love, we need to spread that. That's it. Also, thanks for having me here and thanks for the amazing work you do on this website, always with so much effort and respect for the fans and the franchise. Thanks so much to Scubidu for being our fan spotlight today! I completely agree with his thoughts on where the franchise should go in the future. I also really liked his thoughts for #14 about what a great community this is, and how important it is to remember to be kind to each other. To end off this fan spotlight, I have a bit of an exciting surprise. Although I originally planned for today to be the final spotlight, we actually have one more fan spotlight! The final spotlight will be posted on Monday, September 30 to end off this anniversary month celebration. Be sure to check back then for our final fan spotlight of the year! Update 9/26: A press release has been put out by WBD, revealing that the special will guest star Saweetie and Nicholas Braun. Thanks to Scoobylover to the info!
The announcement came out this past Friday that the Velma Halloween special, "This Halloween Needs to Be More Special!" will be released on Max on October 3. Thanks to the Animation on Max X account, we now have some additional details sharing what we can expect from the special next week. In addition to the poster above, the description for the special was shared: With just 24 hours to bring Velma back, the friends search for a dark spellbook while trying to avoid the wrath of a vengeful spirit. But as the annual Sexy Halloween party nears, Velma and the gang must face their biggest fears… if they all want to make it out alive. Some images from the special were also shared by Animation on Max. Thank you to Jinkies for sharing the links to these! Following the recent addition of lots of Scooby content to Max, quite a bit of the content is in a different order than the air date order. Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! is in the production order listed by the U.S. Copyright Database, which was talked about in Fun Fact #356. In addition, I noticed a couple of other interesting things about the different orders.
The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo is also in a different order with most of the episodes rearranged; however, it's the exact same order that the Boomerang TV channel has been airing them in since at least 2009. The Scooby-Doo Show season 3 also has the order of a lot of the episodes swapped, and it's the exact same order that the USA Network used to air them. Given Be Cool is listed in its production order, and the fact that the odd ordering of 13 Ghosts and The Scooby-Doo Show episodes is streamlined with the order they air on television, this likely means that it is the production order of those episodes. Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? serves as further confirmation of that, as "What a Night, for a Dark Knight!" is placed as the series premiere, and it's been confirmed that it was the first episode written for the show. Here are the orders those series are listed in. For sake of brevity, I will only list the out-of-order seasons and highlight the out of order episodes in red. The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo 1. To All the Ghouls I've Loved Before 2. Scoobra Kadoobra 3. That's Monstertainment! 4. Ship of Ghouls 5. Reflections in a Ghoulish Eye 6. When You Witch Upon a Star 7. A Spooky Little Ghoul Like You 8. Scooby in Kwackyland 9. It's a Wonderful Scoob 10. Me and My Shadow Demon 11. Coast to Ghost 12. The Ghouliest Show on Earth 13. Horror Scope Scoob The Scooby-Doo Show 25. Watch Out! The Williwaw! 26. To Switch a Witch 27. A Creepy Tangle in the Bermuda Triangle 28. The Creepy Case of Old Iron Face 29. A Highland Fling with a Monstrous Thing 30. A Scary Night with a Snow Beast Fright 31. The Tar Monster 32. Jeepers, It's the Jaguaro! 33. Creepy Creature of Vulture's Claw 34.
