Fun Fact of the Week #415

Apparently, Google bans users from creating an account with the username "scoobydoo@gmail.com." After reading this somewhere online, I attempted to do this as a test, and saw that it is indeed correct; Google won't let you create an account with that username. I tested it out and tried to create a couple other random accounts, and things like "bugsbunny@gmail.com," "homersimpson@gmail.com" and "daffyduck@gmail.com" are not allowed either. The reason for this is apparently because of copyright issues with popular characters, as Google could possibly get sued if someone were to use the account in an abusive way pretending to be a copyrighted character.

Also, as a very random addition, for some reason the question "why can't you cry in space?" accidentally popped up when I was researching this. Given that, I'm going to tell you why can't cry in space lol. Because there's no gravity, the tears don't go down, they just stick in your eye as a ball of liquid. Bet that wasn't what you expected to learn when reading this morning's fun fact, but it just goes to show you'll never know what you'll learn when checking the blog for the Monday fun facts haha.

Let's take a look at which upcoming/cancelled project people are most hoping to see from last week's poll! The majority of people think the biggest treat WB could give us would be Trick or Treat, which won the poll with 48 votes! Scoob! Holiday Haunt came in second, with 24 votes. Krypto Too! was a close third with 22 votes, while Velma came in fourth with a surprising 19 votes! It was no mystery that Mystery Pups wasn't going to win the poll, though, as it only got a single vote.

Velma May Still Be Happening

After last week's news that the trademark for Velma had been abandoned, most fans assumed that the show was dead. However, Deadline reported that an email sent out to WB employees mentioned Velma as if it was still happening. Here's the exact quote from the email:

Suzanna Makkos will now report into Amy Gravitt, Head of Comedy and EVP, Programming for HBO. Suzanna has led an incredibly successful comedy slate for Max Originals, punctuated by the acclaimed, Emmy-winning series Hacks, as well as The Sex Lives of College Girls, Rap S**t, and Julia, and also animated series including the upcoming Velma and Young Love. This transition will align our scripted comedy slate under one powerhouse, genre-redefining team; and by unifying this department under Amy, we’ll be able to maximize our effectiveness in continuing to build out our slate across both the HBO and Max Originals brand.

Based on this, it seems like Velma may not have been cancelled after all. It still doesn't explain the trademark news from last week, but it's exciting to know that Holiday Haunt may be the only Scooby production that is not moving forward at the moment. Credit goes to Hippyboy86 for posting this news on the ScoobyAddicts forum.

Despite airing in 2003, "The San Franpsycho" is the only What's New, Scooby-Doo? season 2 episode to have a 2002 production date. Thanks to James for catching this neat little trivia tidbit!

With all the uncertainty lately around Scooby films and shows potentially being cancelled, it seems timely to do a poll asking which upcoming project people are most looking forward to seeing. Holiday Haunt is already cancelled, and Velma seems to probably have been cancelled with Wednesday's news of the trademark being abandoned, but I wanted to also include the other three possibly upcoming projects that we know about, since it's possible they might be cancelled too. If that happens, somebody needs to create some sort of parody Scooby movie in which David Zaslav is behind the mask lol. Thanks to Mr. Neither for suggesting this poll idea!

Our actual best baseball episode poll saw quite different results than the "worst baseball episode poll." "The Unnatural" won last week's poll by a huge margin with 33 votes, making it to the Winner's Circle re-do for the sports polls which will be coming soon! "Grand Scam" was in second place with 10 votes, and "The Demon of the Dugout" was in third place with 7 votes. Surprisingly, the joke option ("All the baseball episodes are awful, baseball in general is awful, in fact, all sports are just plain awful") placed above the remaining two episodes, coming in fourth place with five votes. "The 7th Inning Scare!" barely escaped last place with three votes, whilst "Scooby Pinch Hits" came in last, receiving only two votes.

Scooby-Doo and the 13th Ghost

Just wanted to share a little bit of exciting news here regarding some fanfiction I've written for anyone who's interested! A couple of weeks ago, I was talking with someone in the comments on here about the fact that there's not really much (if any) 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo fanfiction that doesn't just completely rewrite the entire series. Given so many fans were dissatisfied with Scooby-Doo and the Curse of the 13th Ghost's implication that the events of the series may not have even happened, it's surprising that there isn't a lot of  fanfiction out there that has the gang catching the thirteenth ghost that they never were able to in the original series.

This (and my disappointment that they never caught the last ghost in the original show) inspired me to write a fanfic of my own that concludes the series. My biggest problem personally with Curse of the 13th Ghost is that the tone felt incredibly inconsistent with the original series. I had at first considered writing a multi-chapter fanfic like the three previous stories I'd written, but upon thinking about it, I thought the best way to do justice to the ending of this series would be to write a single one-off story that has the gang catching the 13th ghost just like they would have in an episode. Had they been able to catch the 13th ghost in the series, I don't think the finale would have been a super high stakes or cinematic level of quality. I imagine it'd probably be about the same as the premiere, so that's the tone I strived for with this fanfic as well. It's kind of a simple little story, but approaching it like I was writing a regular episode of the series seemed like the best way to correct what Curse of the 13th Ghost did wrong, in my opinion. The finished product ended up being around 7,000 words.

The fanfic is now published on Fanfiction.net, AO3 and the ScoobyAddicts forum, if you're interested in checking it out. Unlike my previous stories which have been rated T, this story is rated K for all audiences. I hope you enjoy the story if you read it!

Velma's Trademark Has Been Abandoned

According to Trademarkia.com, a site housing legal trademarks and legal registrations, the trademark for the Velma series has been abandoned. The original trademark was registered on the day the series was first announced, February 10, 2021, but Trademarkia lists that on July 11, 2022, Jeanene Jobst of Warner Brothers officially filed to abandon the trademark. This means that Warner Brothers is no longer interested in the series. It doesn't necessarily mean that other networks will not pick up the series, but it presumably means that the series will not happen and will likely be cancelled soon.

A member of the ScoobyAddicts forum with an associate that has a connection within Hanna-Barbera Studios also shared what seems to be an internal record from a different site, which confirms the same information about the abandoned trademark. (This can be seen above)

While there has been no official announcement that the series is cancelled, this seems to imply that Velma is no longer moving forward.

Thank you to Hippyboy86 and Dizagaox from the ScoobyAddicts forum for sharing this information!

Fun Fact of the Week #413

The first Daphne & Velma novel states that Luna's real name is Kimberly Moss, and gives Dusk the real name of Muffy St. James. These were never official names given to them in any of the appearances they had in previous official Scooby media. These names appeared frequently in Scooby-Doo fanfiction stories, so frequently in fact that they have sort of been unofficially adopted for the characters. These names appear in numerous stories by different authors across many different fanfiction sites. At one point, these were listed as the characters' real names on Wikipedia, until they were removed in 2019 for being unsourced. I knew about these fan-created names in the fanfiction world, but it dawned on me after someone brought it up to me via email this weekend that many fans might not know where these names originated from.

So if these names aren't official, where did they come from? It seems they first derived from this 2009 blog post from Timothy Brennan, highlighting a very imaginative idea for a Hex Girls series featuring various special musical guest stars including Elvis and Jimi Hendrix.

The first piece of fanfiction to have included these names, at least of what I can find, is "Sanctuary" by an author named HiddenWitch from 2012.

Despite its unfortunate cancellation on Tuesday, the score recording for Scoob! Holiday Haunt still went on! Because the stage was booked and the musicians were already paid, that the score recording session scheduled for Sunday afternoon still occurred. This news comes from Tony Cervone, who shared this on Instagram today with the caption "So what do you do when the movie is canceled, but you’ve already paid for the stage and the musicians? You record the damn score!"
